Volvo MD7A water seals

Post by seadog6532 »

Can anyone tell me where to purchase the little rubber seals that press into the connections on the water pump and manifold for the MD7A Volvo and what to expect to pay for them.

Hi Mark,

You should be able to get them from most any decent Volvo dealer - if their willing to look up the part number for you... and they aren't very expensive at all.

I should have the number floating around somewhere but I won't be seeing KAYLA for another week or so - headed to Niceville FL this w/e for a race on Choctawhatchee Bay (helming a friend's boat).

Marine Parts Express in ME

Post by Michael Abramson »

They have given me good service and offer about a 10% discount off the Volvo retail, which is still a high price. My recollection is these small thick o-rings are about 4.00 each. I don't have my parts manual here but if you don't have the number, let me know and I will do a web search. I always keep extras on board, there are 2 in the water pump, 2 on the metal pipe that feeds the manifold. There is also a conventional o-ring in the thermostat housing and the special thermostat gasket, all of which are worth keeping on board.

Michael: Was that a 'per o-ring' price?

If so, we need to spec a spare and check with McMaster-Carr!
That seems like for more than I ever paid for them and I'm pretty sure I bought half a dozen the last time I got some.

The last Volvo dealer I worked with (and got great service from!) was Marine Maintenance of Bay County in Panama Beach FL @ 850-236-0061.

OK, off by a buck.....

The part number for these is 829714. See this European web site, refer to item 70.

http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/vol ... 0400D.aspx

While these o-rings are only .21 Euro according to this web site, you will have to order them there to get that price. If you order from Marine Parts Express, they are $2.84 each. Try around and you may find for less in the US, but not by much. If McMaster has the right thing, please post the info here. One could possibly make these by finding the right diameter/thickness rubber hose and slicing off 1/4" sections.

I guess I'm lucky that the previous owner had about 10 or 15 of them in a spares kit. They don't look like anything special though. I may be wrong but they look like square rings or lathe cut rings to me.

I did a quick check of McMaster-Carr and they sell square rings too. Just go to the O-rings and select the square cross section. Select the ID first to get to the small sizes. If you select the width first all you come up with is the large ID stuff. I did a little playing around with sizes guessing an ID of 1/2 and came up with around $10.00 per hundred.

If none of MacMaster's will work, you should be able to source them online for a whole lot less than 3 or 4 bucks each if you can find a place that sells small quanties. Try this place:

Oh yeah, you may also want to try an auto parts store or a shop that works on automotive air conditioners. It seems like that I have seen something similar on car AC piping years ago. Been a long time though so my memory may being playing tricks on me.

If Volvo only used one or two sizes, you may have the start of a side business. :D

Good Luck

Thanks everyone. I called Marine Maintenance in Panama City and have 4 new seals on the way. The cost was $3.16 each plus shipping. As usual, you just can't beat the knowlege on this board.

Hi Mark,

Could you please measure the the ID, height & thickness of the seals when they arrive and send the data to me?

If so, I'll wade through McMaster-Carr and order a 100 of them, if I can find a match. I also plan to order seals for the fuel filler, waste pump-out and fresh water fill. Sounds like an easy start to a parts co-op for us Cape Dory owners! ;-)

Thanks,

Very similar rubber seals can be purchased at any hardware store for $0.50 or less per seal. I recently cleaned my exhaust manifold and located the seals at True Value. No problems so far and they may actually seal better than the previous.

The new seals came in and were installed yesterday. They worked fine and as close as I can tell with what I have to work, with the measurements are... 11/16" out side dia. 3/32" wall thickness and 1/8" thick. I'll look at the hardware store and auto parts houses in the next few days and see what I can find.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks, Mark! Here's what McMaster-Carr has and they cost 10.54 per hundred, plus shipping & handling (unknown at the moment).

OK, fellow CD owners (with MD7A/Bs) Who wants some? If enough people will PM me to make it worth while, I'll place an order and send them to you via snail mail... I'm guessing 15 cents a piece & 50 cents per order (of 1 to 10) for envelope and postage. Sound reasonable?

Seals

Michael -- Count me in for 10. Sounds like 10 will cost less than 1 from most Volvo dealers.

Please send PM for ordering info

Post by mgphl52 »

Hi Folks,

Please send me a PM for ordering the seals.
It will help me make sure I don't miss someone!

When we reach 'critical mass' I will send a request for mailing instructions to all who are in my PM order list.

Thanks!
