Hand Starting YSM - 8 in a CD27

Post by Richard G »

Does anyone have any tips for hand cranking the YSM-8? I have read the manual etc. but not had any luck. It is real tight turning the handle and avoiding the starboard side of the engine compartment. Has anyone extended the handle to clear the engine compartment better. Thanks.

I tried many times over a 17 year period to hand crank start TIA MARI's Yanmar 8. Blush. Never could. Tried many techniques to no avail.

I was able to do it several times, It seems to me I purchased a special longer handle from Yanamr. (I bought this boat in 87 and sold it in 96 so some things are getting a bit fuzzy).

HOWEVER I have some great photos of me with the black eye of the year
when the thing kicked back into my face during one starting atempt.

I have a YSB-8 on my 27, and while I've heard they are similar, I do not know too much about the YSM. But on mine, on the starboard side of the engine, there is a decompression lever. I hooked up a line one day that kept the lever aft and hand cranked the engine until it got as fast as I could crank it. I let go of the lever and it kicked on. Just look out for any kickbacks. Have fun.

Richard,

The trick is compression unloading. Your YSM-8 has a decompression lever on the cylinder head. This may be hooked to a control cable, but usually is not. This lever partially opens the exhaust valve and prevents any compression in the cylinder. Result is easy turning with the hand crank.

I previously owned a 12 HP 2 cylinder Lister diesel which only had hand start capability. I had a rope attached to the decompression lever. To start I (1) Set the throttle to start position (2) Pulled the decompression rope and stepped on it. (3) Turned the engine with the hand crank. (4). When I had the engine turning fast (4 or 5 turns) I took my foot of the rope and the engine immidiately fired up. It was easy to start this way.

Your engine should be designed so that when the engine starts spining on its own the hand crank disengages. This is easy to check by turning the hand crank in the wrong direction. It should ratchet and not turn the engine.

I currently have a Yanmar YSB-12. I would like to set it up for hand starting, but the engine is reversed and can only be accesed from under the cockpit. Some Yanmar YSB/M/E engines have hand crank shafts which can be accessed from the front or back. Others can only be accessed from the front.

You could build a extended handle shaft from a piece of pipe and welding a handle to it. Just make sure the end which attaches to the engine is identical to the old one. Otherwise it may not disengage when the engine starts.

Good Luck,
