New Diesel installed and purring
We bought a 1977 28 CD last August and have spent the winter and spring bringing her back to life after she spent 10 years on the hard. She was owned by an elderly gentleman whose health was failing . He didn't want to sell her but wasn't able to sail. Over the last months I replaced just about everything below deck including the stuffing box. Today we fired up a brand new Vetus 2 cylinder 18 hp motor and took her on her shake down. I've also done all of the bright work and the Amanda really is starting to look fantastic. One problem is that while under power water comes up through the rudder post. Has anyone had this problem. How did you fix it?

Vetus?
A Vetus in a CD28? Neat! Sounds like a great project.
I was under the impression Veti have very wide footprints. Was it an easy fit on the old Volvo beds? have you got any pictures of the Vetus in your CD28? How did you run the exhaust?
Best,
John

Sailing involves the courage to cherish adventure and the wisdom to fear danger. Knowing where one ends, and the other begins, makes all the difference.

water in rudder post
I am the original owner of a 77 cd 28 there was no packing gland on my 77 cd 28 from the factory. Water has been coming up the rudder shaft since I bought her new in 77, the only time it doesn't is when a good crop of barnicales attach to the rudder shaft. The water only comes up as a result of cavation from the propeller when I am under power. I have thought "many times" about machining a proper packing gland to fit on the cockpit end of the rudder post. My solution after living with the problem for 30 years is,that I have added a trex grate to the cockpit sole that keeps my feet out of the water and costs less time and money than inventing a packing gland.
you have a grate boat, enjoy it ,and forget about the water.

On my 1977 cd27 I had the same problem with water coming up the rudder post while motoring. After a year of living with this I came across a piece of masking tape(under my water tank) with an "O" ring folded between it. It was labeled " O ring for rudder". I took off my tiller cap, loosened the allen screws on "post cap"(?),placed the o ring around the post and reassembled. The "post cap" had a channel that gave me the impression that maybe there was some sort of packing missing. I bought two o-rings and after two seasons have yet to replace the first one,and not a drop of water.
I'm not so sure that a rubber o-ring was original equipment, but it sure worked like a charm for me.

My 1974 cd 28 is packed with waterproof grease at the top-there is a hole in the rudder tube where it protrudes above the deck and every 10 years or so I pick out the hard dry grease and use a grease gun with a grease fitting and force some new stuff in there-I have never had a problem with water-O rings will work also-
