We have just spent the the last three weeks looking for a replacement muffler for cd 28 s/v. We have a volvo penta md7a and the goose neck from the engine exhaust to the muffler cracked, and separated. (wonder why the muffler mounts to the transmission any way) but at any rate, what can we do? who has the part? is there a better way to rebulid the system? There are not many Cape Dory's down this far south, something about light air and and blue water boats, We love our Cape Dory, and would appreciate any help in finding a new muffler. thanks, Kev & Laura

All is not lost. If the "gooseneck" to which you refer is similiar to the fitting on our Universal, your local plumbing supply company has what you need. In our case, if memory serves me correctly, we found a broken piece of pipe inside of the "U" fitting (the pipe broke at the threading). The setup consisted of a reducer from the exhaust manifold to the "U" (which was a street elbow--smooth on the inside) and a nipple about 6" long which goes into the muffler. The nipple has a smaller diameter pipe welded in at a 45 degree angle, for the seawater discharge. I had the nipple duplicated by a local welder for about $25. Generally black iron pipe is preferred over galvanized for this application.
Removing your existing works is nasty and brutish. Use a pair of the longest pipe wrenches (Stilson or "monkey" as you wish) have a small sledge (engineer's hammer) and maybe a propane torch handy. Use a penetrating solvent (Liquid Wrench or the like). I had to remove the muffler to install the "flexible" (HAHAHAHA) wet exhaust hose. Be patient and try not to swear when small children are within earshot.
