i know some have spoken about replacing pulpits, perhaps for this very reason. i also know new pulpits are very expensive.
here"s what i did at two base plates and it worked great.
i drilled 1/2" holes down thru the deck into the anchor chain locker right thru the center of the base plate, then pushed up thru the holes 1/2" threaded rod about 13" into the hollow pulpit rail applying marine tex grey epoxy from the topside as a friend pushed the rod from below. after the epoxy set up overnite, i went into the chain locker and tightened lockwashers and nuts on the rods from below which pulled the pulpit down tight.
this worked very well and saved alot of "boat units"
