CD25D Wind Speed Indicator: Wiring

Post by jim jamieson »

I'm thinking of installing a Standard 45 mast head wind speed-direction indicator on my CD25D. Any suggestions for snaking the sensor wire down the mast and installing a water proof connector for the sender through the coach top would be appreciated.

1st, I used a back/forestay to snake coax down/up the mast of my Catalina 27 and it worked fine, just had to work it abit when it got to the spreader due to a through bolt. But, it was certainly no chore!

2nd, I dont know if this will work on a 25d (esp when I install the halyard plate I want to install) but the May '99 issue of cruising world has a Workbench Project that I really like the looks of, pg 108. If this rig will work around my (hopefully soon to be installed) halyard plate, I think I will do mine as indicated in this article. Looks really water proof, and allows room for expansion (IMHO).

Happy New Years to all and to all a great Y2K.

As far as snaking sensor wires are concerned, that will be difficult, because the wires that are already there are secured by duct-tape-covered foam blocks in the mast. If you want to try, disconnect a wire from a masthead lamp/antenna use that to pull a messenger line, and then use the messenger line to pull the other wires through, including the replacement for the wire you used to pull the messenger through.

I and a few other people have run PVC pipe up the mast and secured it with pop rivets. This keeps the wires noise-free, and if you leave messenger lines inside makes it easy to add future wires. If you do so, measure carefully, and cut a window in the PVC for your steaming/deck light wires. Run everything through the PVC first, and then drive the pipe through the mast. The foam blocks, if they are not forced out the end, will help secure the pipe while you rivet it in place.

BTW- Isn't this weather something? over 55 F today! It's a shame my insurance cuts off after December 1.!

I don't know about the CD25D but on my CD30, I have a teak dorade very close to the base of the mast. To solve an annual problem of corroding wire connections, I drilled a small hole in the side of the dorade, ran all the mast wires into the dorade and down the existing air vent into the boat. All the wire connections for the mast lights, antennas, etc, are now below decks and no more corrosion! (There's also fewer holes through the deck and thus fewer potential sources of leaks.)
