We brought our new 28 from Hammock Island in Pasadena to our slip in Essex, MD. Even though the day was cold and dreary, and we had some trouble under power, it was still a really good day.

We will be a little late getting in
The Saint John river this year is having a near record flood. There has been major flooding up the river while around here there a few wet basements and a couple closed roads. However as the flood water comes down the levels will rise some more. We think it will crest on Sunday at around 4 meters above summer levels. I have included a couple pictures of our yacht club. Right now the breakwater is under at least a meter of water. So launch will have to wait a couple weeks for the levels to drop.
So we hope it doesn't rain

A Little Late Getting In

Yes, the weather has certainly been unpredictable. Let's keelhaul the weatherman. Aaaargh!
The spring season here on the Great Lakes has been anything but normal. Two weeks ago the temperature hovered in the low 70°s F. This past week the temp had a hard time reaching the high 40s. Last night it was down to 32° and the night before it was in the 20s. I know that this may sound weird, but Thursday we had snow. Not much snow, no accumulation to speak of, but nevertheless, it snowed.
On cold nights, the water temperature of the lake is warmer than the air. Depending on the wind direction, the temp of the area around the lake shore is sometimes 5° higher than what it is three or four miles inland. It acts something like a big radiator.
Tomorrow, I plan to remove the winter tarp from one of my boats, if only for a look-see. The weather is too undependable to start any projects. Even if there was a heated barn to use to get a jump on the season, which I have, the cost of fuel today is prohibitive.
Good weather will be here soon enough. Right now it isn't the time to do any brightwork or fiberglass, epoxy and poly work. Besides that, the low temperatures are just too darn uncomfortable to do any serious work.
The Erie Canal and other state canals opened up on May 01. Nothing out of the ordinary. The water level was normal, for a change. It is raining as I type. The weatherguy calls for rain tonight, a 50/50 chance for showers tomorrow. Same for Sunday. On second thought, maybe the winter cover stays on for a while longer. Ho-hum, I guess that I'll give it another week.
