Hi Tad,Anyone have any experience with the Ocean Navigator sponsored Celestial Navigation Course?
Anyone have a recommendation for a good course in the Greater DC metropolitan area (Annapolis, Baltimore)?
Thanks.
I took the Ocean Navigator weekend cel nav seminar a few years ago while preparing for the Marion to Bermuda race. It was an intense two days but the instruction and materials were excellent. It was fast-paced and covered noon sight, sun, moon & planet and star sights. It would be helpful to have studied some prior to going and they do assume some experience plotting DRs, etc. Their approach was somewhat different- no sight forms to use! They started with noon sights and built the look-up and reduction techniques from there. Unfortuately, there was not much info on sextant adjustments, etc. and no actual use of the sextant. At the time I believed it was worth the money. There are some shipboard-based courses that do the whole ball of wax. Some ASA (American Sailing Assoc.) school go as far as celestial. I believe there is one in Rock Hall, MD. Hope this helps. dvw

Re: Celestial Nav. Course
i do not have experience with the course, but i highly recommend mary blewitt's book "celestial nav for yachtsmen" or something like that. it is only 50 pages or so, very simple and practice oriented, yet covers the theory enough to avoid just being a cookbook.Anyone have any experience with the Ocean Navigator sponsored Celestial Navigation Course?

Re: Celestial Nav. Course
The Unites States Power Squadron used to have and probably still does have a superb set of courses in navigation (I used to teach Advanced Piloting). They offered two levels of Celestial Navigation, done superbly well. I recommend you look them up.
