CD 30' Ketch Engine R / R ?

Post by Alan Levy »

Doing some homework and I would like to know how EZ or difficult it is to remove the Volvo engine that seens to be 'stuffed' in the CD30 engine compartment ? What part of the interior would need to be removed, if any ? Is it a big job ? Do you have to partially dismantle the motor first ? How much for a complete rebuild ? Is it as tight " in there " as it seems ?

Thx,

Alan

Hi Alan,
I assume this is the same CD-30/K you are looking to buy. I was a CD dealer for 11 years and ran a boatyard associated with that dealership. I recall only one MD-2B being removed from a CD-30. It had frozen (cold) and we sent it to Volvo/Norfolk for rebuilding. It was a bear to do -- all of the bolt-on stuff had to be removed. It takes some engineering to get the block ass'y out but it can be done. If the cockpit sole needs replacing you might consider removing that and taking the engine out the easy way. What's to lose? Both jobs must be done and one facilitates the other. (the sole problem is endemic with Cape Dory's) The ketch rig is great even though it looks like an explosion in a rigging factory. You might reconsider pedestal steering as there is precious little cockpit to begin with. Perhaps a destroyer wheel in lieu of the spoked CD one?

Hope this helps,

Alan - You have your work cut out for you. It seems as though the Cape Dory was built around the engine! We replaced the Volvo in our 1980 CD30 Ketch a couple of years ago. Put in a Westerbeke 23 HP. Much better! The new engine was about 5K, which included new exhaust system, new dripless stuffing box, etc. etc. We replaced everything. The new engine is smaller, but it's still tight. One of the problems we ran into is that we had to cut access out of the floor in the galley to install the new exhaust system. If you'd like all the gory details, contact the shop that did this for us: Noah's Ark (ask for Mike Potter)(321) 639-8070
Replacing the engine was not something we could do by ourselves (we aren't THAT handy!), but my husband was very involved in the installation. We've been very happy with the results and have not once regretted the expense.

Alan,

These comments apply only to the Volvo MD7A/B, that we found to be fitted to our 1983 CD30C.

Three years ago, we completely rebuilt our engine. The take out and removal was rock simple..don't believe the reports of having to remove the cockpit sole for gosh sakes (:^)).
The engine certainly does have a few wires and connectors, a couple hoses and exhaust fittings attached to it which must be disconnected, but that is a 30 minute job..including taking pictures and making drawings.

Removal of the engine is very straightforward. We used a couple tools that you might be interested in..a 5 ft. long 2x4 with a chain hook mounted on one end, and a large eyebolt mounted slighlty behind the center point of the 2x4. The idea is that you will be attaching the chain hook to the lifting hook on the engine itself. The eyebolt attaches to a lifting force such as a block and tackle on the boom, or the marinas mast winch. As weight is taken up on the 2x4, the engine is adjusted side to side and back and forth to free it from the 4 mounting bolts. The engine, once free of the bolts will slip straight out of the engine compartment. Once free of the companionway space, the engine is lifted straight up and out. No problems at all.

The engine was rebuilt by a couple guys that I consider geniuses, and it now starts on the first compression stroke, and has more power than ever before. Cost for everything, parts, labor for the rebuild and the removal/replacement was around $3000.

The Volvo MD7A/B is a good engine, and should be capable of producing 3-5000 hours of operations before a rebuild, unless something untoward has occured to the engine or it's air or fuel (as was our case). Granted the parts are rediculously expensive to replace..so take care of her.

Good Luck,

Alan.
There's a world of difference between the Volvo MD-2/B and the MD-7A/B. You didn't say which engine this boat has but based on its age my guess is the MD-2. This is an important determination. Larry's point is well taken for the MD-7 and he seems to have discovered the usual way (or a variation thereof) of engine removal. IMHO the Volvo engine is well worth the expense necessary to restore it to prime condition with no engineering (or $$$) required for mounting differences, exhaust hookup, linkages, fuel supply, etc., the usual stuff one runs into with a different powerplant.
