Outboard size for CD25

I am inquiring about what size outboard for a 25 foot CD. Is a 9.9 horsepower engine sufficent or should I go higher or lower. Any other considerations would be appreciated.

I HAVE A 9.9 LONG SHAFT ON MY CD25 THAT MOVES THE BOAT AT 6 KNTS. I ALSO HAVE USED A 8 HP SHORT SHAFT IT MOVED THE BOAT AT 5.5 KNTS.
THE SHORT SHAFT WOULD COME UP OUT OF THE WATER IN ROUGH WEATHER.
I DON'T THINK YOU COULD GET MUCH BIGGER ENGINE DOWN IN THE WELL

We owned a CD25 for five years, and after our aged 9.9 Merc finally expired, a very smart yard manager suggested that we replace it with a 6 hp Johnson. We did that, and we were very satisfied. We could cruise at five knots, which is fast enough for any small sailboat, IMHO. Mind you, when it's windy, we generally sail, but on several occasions we powered to windward in very rough conditions. (I recall one savage morning, powering into Kent Narrows, with all of the upper Chesapeake being blown on top of us by a strong northwesterly.) And not only was the engine big enough to push us, it also charged the batteries. But it was small enough to fit neatly in the well, even swiveling enough to steer a bit, with the tiller (and throttle controls) reaching out into the cockpit. And the motor was so easy to start by hand that we could do without the sometimes temperamental electric starter that we had used for the 9.9. It was much lighter, and easier to move around, too.

Mind you, we also like the 7hp Yanmar in our CD27!

Depending on the conditions in which you sail a 9.9 HP long shaft is more than enough power. I have repowered from a 9.9 Merc to a Long Shaft 9.8 Nissan. I can make it through a 5 knot adverse current
entering or leaving a narrow railroad bridge inlet. There have been other posts here outlining the theoretical HP requirement.

I can tell you I have towed a disabled O'day 28 in 5 foot seas and 20-25 knot winds with my boat. Something I don't relish doing but the little 9.8 performed very well I also think prop selection has much to do with it. High thrust prop for a heavy dispalcement boat is highly recommended.

We have installed an 8hp Honda in our CD25 and have 2 years experience with it. We have taken trips up to 8 days which have required a good deal of motor sailing to achieve our objectives. The Honda will cruise the boat hour after hour, if necessary, at an easy 5.4 knots, consuming about .3 gal/hr. In reasonable weather conditions, the engine will push the boat past hull speed. 6 plus knots can be achieved and 7 possible sometimes. We have two 6 gal. tanks with a transfer switch which provides for a long range if required. (Crossing to the Bahamas, for example.) The 4 stroke engine is fairly quiet but is somewhat heavy. Mine is 70 plus pounds. At least for the Honda, I don't think anything over 8hp would fit in the well.
If you are not now aware of the problems of providing adequate fresh air to the engine, a search of the past messages will be helpful.

1974, hull # 165. Owned her since 1991. Replaced a 8hp Yahama with a 6hp Suzuki. Very pleased with the 6hp. Pushes us well against the strong currents of the Cape Fear River. Also, very light and fits in engine well easily except the throttle arm is about 2" too long. The throttle arm situation could be easily corrected with a smaller engine mount board. We also have a 2hp Suzuki aux engine that does fine in a pinch.

I started with a short shaft 8hp Mariner. It had plenty of power but it barely fit in the well, it was heavy and noisy.
I replaced it with a 5hp Honda 4 stroke. I don't have as much power BUT it is much quieter, is easy to remove from the well and my two 6 gallon fuel tanks last forever.
