Purchase Checklist

Post by John Kirby »

I know this has been a topic for discussion in the past, but I could not find the old posts using the search option. However, I'm going to look at a Typhoon that I have had my eye on for a while and would appreciate everyones advice/thoughts on what to look for and watch out for. Thank you for your time.

John:
These are the things that I looked for or checked:
(1) Hull blistering or deck delamination. If either of these are evident,I would either pass or at least have it surveyed by a competent surveyor who can use a "water meter" or whatever it's called and tell you what to expect in repairs.
(2) Cabin top indentation. The area under the mast tabernacle is not supported that well and if the previous owner(s) tuned the rigging to a high C it may be cracking or indented. Some boats have already been retrofitted with a compression post inside the cabin. I have a hard enough time moving about in my cabin, but a compression post would be impossible. You may not care.
(3) Trailer. Does it have it or not? Is it important or not? If it has it and is not important, you can probably sell it on this board.
(4) Sails, how many and what kind of shape. Mine came with the original main and jib and a newer genoa. They are not new but usable. If you have to replace any of these it can add quite abit. It takes a real blow before I use the jib and in light winds the genoa is a great help.
(5) Price: seems to range from $2000 to $6000 depending upon the condition, the equipment and the audacity of the seller.
(6) Motor and bracket. I have seen several postings of missing brackets. It is a neat and probably expensive bracket that hooks onto the transom.
(7) Rudder post. Take ahold of the rudder and give it a good shake. It should not be excessively (whatever that means) loose. If it is I would get an estimate on repair so you are not surprised.
(8) That takes care of blisters and trailers and only leaves leaky gskets, but I don't think there are any.
Good luck and I hope you find what you want.
