Cape Dory Dating Service mysteriously goes off line
One moment it is there. Someone searching for a captain. I hesitate and wonder: "How important is '5'10" or better'? How critical is "humorous"? How secure is "financially secure"? But most importantly, does she have a Cape Dory that is better than my little Typhoon? Oh well, it is way to difficult, but I check the board again to see how many of the regulars are responding and, aw shucks, it's been flushed. Back to bottom blisters, leaking gaskets and searches for typhoon trailers. John

Well, maybe I was too hasty. "Captain Wanted for First Mate" seemed a bit off topic to me. Besides, what if "she" was a husky pirate that would make a date to meet for coffee, lay a marlinspike behind your ear, and run off with your boat? One moment it is there. What say you, group? Catherine? Are "Cape Dory Captain Wanted" ads acceptable for this board? Shall we invite First Mate to repost?

I would rather read about bottom blisters and leaky gaskets than read about someone's love life or 'mating' needs. (I assume that is what the posting was- I didn't see it .) You're instincts were correct.
Keep up the good work. This is an excellent board!

By all means! But keep the cat ready ..
I think any first-mate who is looking for a captain SPECIFICALLY with a Cape Dory exhibits such saltiness and discernment that their ad should be allowed on the board. But they must be required to register their identity with Walt, so when we spot their ad on some other boat board, we can lash them to the anchor locker grate, and give them twelve with the cat of nine.

Re: Cape Dory Dating Service mysteriously goes off line
The great thing about this board is its single purpose - Cape Dories.
While I admit to being a 49YOSWNMM-NS6'4", what does "financially secure" mean? Can afford a boat? ( More likely- would be financially secure if he *didn't* own a boat.)
Also, spouses of our participants might appreciate a board that does not expose their loved ones to, ahem, temptation.
Since E-Mail addresses are included in member profiles, If one member should be interested in another, there is an opening to a further contact there.
Maybe others will think differently. Maybe I will think differently after seeing what others think.

I didn't see it either, but there are plenty of sites on the internet for people looking for that sort of thing. My vote would be to keep the board for boat related things only. Lonely hearts can come to the CD get togethers to meet CD captains. We could fill the board with this kind of thing and lose our focus.Well, maybe I was too hasty. Perhaps a separate part of the board can be set up so they can post there ??

In my humble opinion we should allow a limited amount of 'captain wanted' posts. If it gets to be a problem it could be stopped at a later date. I have seen posts on this board in the past where someone was looking to get hold of someone from their past. Those posts were of no interest to anyone but the two parties involved. They were not deleted.
While I am not in the market for a new mate I can imagine how benneficial that post could be to some Cape Dory owner. Just think of it. You are single, have a Cape Dory and are wondering how best to get that brown stain off of the hull at the waterline. As it is now you can use the board to get a dozen opinions on the best product to remove that stain, but you can't use it to find a life long sailing companion. If you could then she might just buy the best product and remove the brown stain for you! Perhaps she has enough money that together you can afford to upgrade from that 28 to a 33. The possibilities are endless.
Now imagine the flip side. You are a single woman who loves Cape Dories. You can't afford a boat of your own and you can't post to find potential mates who do own Cape Dories. Instead you end up having to settle on someone who owns a Hunter. A terrible fate indeed.
Your instincts to pull the post until additional thought could be given to the subject reflects your outstanding talent as a webmaster. Now that we have considered the issue, why not let these posts in? If they threaten the board at a later date you could delete them at that time.

You guys need to get a life beyond sailing. Have none of you ever had difficulties finding crew? Think of the possibilities here. Beyond that, what is better than an evening sail on a pretty boat with a partner who shares your enthusiasm. I vote for "tasteful" inquiries.

It is nice to see that a few Gentlemen Captains of the CD Association have evolved and do understand the possibilities of enjoying a lady who is interested in more than leaky gaskets and bottom blisters. For a moment, I was wondering if your website was an anti-female site.
Some of us female boaters/sailers are just as or even more capable of handling sailing and motor vessels. I choose to ignore the narrow minded and judgemental members who made such nasty comments regarding my posting. I thank you for being a "today" person and realize that one doesn't necessarily go to a bar to meet someone. I am just a mature, nice lady boater/sailer with over 20 years experience on the water who wants to meet single gentlemen boaters/sailers. I believe in camaraderie, the spirit of friendly good fellowship between all boaters and I do not discriminate.
Again, I appreciate your support and hopefully other ladies and gentlemen of your membership will see the advantage instead of the disadvantage of a potential First Mate looking for a Gentleman Captain.

Thank you Rich
It is very encouraging to see that some of your membership are so supportive.
I did post a tastefully and very well written message but unfortunately again, your webmaster has flushed it. What does that tell me ?
You are so right, some of those fellows should get a life beyond leaky gaskets and bottom blisters.
Some of us female boaters/sailers are very experienced in the boating world and chose to meet gentlemen who have the same interests.
I enjoyed your following line: "what is better than an evening sail on a pretty boat with a partner who shares your enthusiasm". Maybe some of your members do no longer enjoy that wonderful evening sail with a partner that shares the same enthusiasm. I surely feel sorry for them.
Rich, thanks again for your support.

You don't HAVE TO read it !!!
Pride of ownership and the comaradarie of fellow Dorians are the strong points of this board. I agree that we don't want a board full of solocitations, but I see no harm in allowing captains to find crew, and vice versa. It's great to have a steady sailing buddy or two.
I vote for tastefull posts. There have been other posts from captains inviting crew to accompany down the ICW. If it becomes popular, maybe a seperate page could handle the traffic.

Re: Cape Dory Dating Service mysteriously goes off line
Walt, since most of us never saw the post you snatched away so speedily, we're all working in the dark. However, what if it had been posted by a man? A man simply seeking a sail on a Cape Dory, so he could make up his mind about what boat to buy. Would you have banned that? I doubt it. But from the sound of things, the disappearing post was couched in language that indicated an interest in rather more than the boat itself. In that case, I believe you did the right thing. If the lady simply wants a test ride on a Cape Dory, invite her simply to say so--without any stipulations about the potential captain's looks, likes, bank balance, or marital status. That, as you say, is off-topic.

Since most of you are "working" (interesting term) in the dark, I thought that maybe you should read the tastefully and well written post which was flushed or snatched speedily as you say. How can you judge someone, a nice lady, who would like to meet a single Captain who might be interested in a boating friend or partner for future boating/sailing. Is that off-topic? So for your benefit and hopefully others who are curious of what happened and why your webmaster flushed my post, here it is. Now you be the judge if so needed. Remember, we are no longer in the year 1800.
I would like to meet a GENTLEMAN CAPTAIN, 5'10" or taller as I am a tall and slender lady. He must love boating/sailing (although having sailed for over 20 years, I am now hooked on power versus sail). I would like him to be active, enjoy spontaneous getaways,
discovering all the beautiful beaches, new anchorages, different marinas, dingying around
, maybe hiking trails, all the interests attached to boating. Honesty and sincerity are first in my life. I would like to meet someone with a great sense of humor who will make
me laugh as I am happy and want to stay happy. One who is warm and very passionate, who is considerate and will not judge and, at the same time carries little emotional baggage, who is intellectually, emotionally and financially secure. Physical attraction and good chemistry are very important. I would like him to be able to listen with his head and his heart. Being an outgoing person, I do enjoy entertaining friends occasionally and I would like him to enjoy having friends over a nice dinner or BBQ and eat good food, drink good wines. Again, you must be sincere and honest, healthy in body and mind. I am
looking forward to hearing from you. From a potential First Mate

In my humble opinion, (and as I said earlier) I would much rather you discuss your 'bottom blisters' than hear comments like "a few gentlemen Captains...have evolved" and "I was wondering if your website was an anti-female site". (Who's being judgemental here?) I can't think of a better reason to vote to delete your original message than to hopefully avoid the kind of chatter (including mine!) that your post has inspired. I'm glad to hear you are a "mature, nice lady boater/sailer..." and who can argue with "camaradie (and) the spirit of friendly good fellowship" I do sincerely wish you success in your search. But, when I click on the CAPE DORY INFORMATION EXCHANGE I'm not interested in some 'leaky gasket' telling me and others to get a life... I have a life, and I know the difference between boats and therapy. BTW I'm looking for a trailor for my CD25 (seriously).
