boat choice
hello fellow sailors,
I've recently become aware of the Cape Dory boats and may want to move up from my present boat (Montgomery 15) in the future.
Any suggestions on models? my sailing is mainly Texas lakes and Texas Gulf coast bays with occasional 3-4 day trips.
projected price range: 5-8k
thanks for any advice

I've sailed the Typhoon daysailor about 8-9 times at my sailing club before getting my M-17. Very solid and forgiving boat. You might also look into the CD-25 (outboard model) which can be found in your price range.

Re: boat choice
I think Harvey is right that the Typhoon and CD25 are going to be your choices in that price range. That's good because they are both great boats! I own a 25 and have a long history with that model. It's a great daysailor. It's easly singlehanded. It is forgiving of mistakes (not that I make any). The only advantage of the 25 over the Typhoon is that it a little bigger. Most 25's are equipped with full, if cramped, cruising acomodations. It might tempt you to extend those 3-4 day trips to a week or two.
Good luck

Randy:
I have a Typhoon Weekender that I sail primarily at the marina I own near Lincoln, Ne. Through 15 years of sailing and selling sailboats I have been lucky to sail a wide variety and have found the typhoon to be a very enjoyable boat. The Nov, 1998 issue of Soundings had a great article. "She's been called 'America's littlest yacht.' One of the timeless sailboat designs from the boards of the prolific Carl Alberg, the Cape Dory Typhoon has developed a small cult folowing ..."
I have never sailed the 25, or for that matter any other Cape Dory, but if cramped quarters are not important, if being designed by Carl Alberg is important and if being able to step the mast by yourself is important than I would opt for the Typhoon. These items all were or were not important to me, but it could be entirely different for you. Now after the Huskers find some way to beat Texas in the Big 12 Championship game and you want to visit the Mecca of football, come to Lincoln and I will be happy to take you for a sail. If you have specific questions feel free to email me.

If you are going to a CD the only real starting place in the price range you state is a Typhoon. Not easy to find but they are out there.thanks all for your comments and advice, I'll give your responses consideration.

In N.C. there is one on trailer. 252 943 6400. Don't use my name, she won't like that. Just say you heard she had one and wasn't sailing it.
