Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving!!
I took the opportunity this long, warm (in NY) Thanksgiving weekend to pull the winches off my Cd27 to take home and service them for the first time. The genoa winches (Lewmar 16s) went fine. However, on the mast winches I cannot budge either the screws holding the pads to the mast nor the screws holding the winches to the pads. There is a fair amount of corrosion on the aluminum pads and around the screwheads holding the pads to the mast. The mast winches are Lewmar 6 with (surprise) plastic internal main spindles. Some of the corrosion had built up underneath the plastic spindle base on the genoa winch and started deflecting the plastic a bit. I just want to get everything off and reinstall to minimize future corrosion. Any suggestions on how to get the @#$&@## screws out??

Help with Mast Winches!!

Re: Help with Mast Winches!!
I just removed my mast winches this last weekend as well. First make sure you have the right size screwdriver, the biggest one that you can get on the screws because a smaller one will "mess" up the slot in the screw. I tapped lightly the top of the screw and then with firm force try to tighten and then untighten and then tighten and untighten and slowly the screws started to free up. spray some wd40 in there and just go back and forth on the screw. got them all out that way without breaking the head off!
Good luck

Re: Help with Mast Winches!!
In addition to Larry's comments, you might try an impact wrench. This is not the air wrench they use to change your tires, but something that looks like a screwdriver handle about 5" long. To use it, you chuck the right size screwdriver head into the wrench and use a hammer to pound on the rear of the wrench. The hammering exerts a torque at the same time it holds the screwdriver bit in the grove.
They are not expensive and you can usually find them at automotive stores.
Good luck.

Re: Help with Mast Winches!!
Hey Captain Bill,
Ideas, Soak the the screw and everything in the area (where the head of the screw touches the winch base, the screw threads (thru any mast opennings)) with something like Liquid Wrench for a period of time. Try heating the screw (soldering iron in the screw head, or a small torch thru any mast opennings). Be careful of an open flame around the Liquid Wrench. You want a temperature difference between the screw and the mast, so you need to heat the screw and not the mast. Be careful of the "impact" screwdriver. Too hard of a hit could snap the screw off, then you have real problems. Try "rocking" the screw back and forth (yes, try tighting it), then soak some more.
