CD25 teak trim

OK, the usually simple semi annual teak refinishing has turned into a major deal. the cockpit coamings are off. one is cracked and really needs replacement (so I figure I might as well replace both), as does the stern piece immediately aft of the motor well.

I checked out the original manufacturer, and he'll do it but doesn't have patterns.

Does anyone have a suggestion? (I priced teak at $20/board foot.)

Exact thickness isn't critical. I'd just get some teak and use the old lumber as a pattern. I believe if you browse this site there is a supplier of teak somewhere who does have patterns, but I'd still take my pattern off what was on the the boat.

As Bruce suggests, it is probably best to use the old coamings as a pattern. As a teak alternative, try to locate some pao lope; it is a south american hardwood similar to teak, but easier to work with. It is denser than teak, but is easier on cutting tools. The big benefit is that it costs about $4 per board foot.

If you are in New England I will get you the name of our supplier here in Massachusetts.

I have purchased teak for over 15 years. They sell rough cut or finely milled in just about any size you want. I have been in there warehouse and have never seen more variety. They are in Flanders, N.J. They have beautiful Teak parquet flooring which I have used in the kitchens of two homes I have built. They have teak plywood which I used to rebuild the stearing box seat on my CD30 back in 1985. Phone 973 584 7554.

$20.00 a board foot sounds high to me. I bought some teak last year at Public Lumber in Detroit.. It seems to me I paid $14.00/15.00 a board foot.

We purchase Pao Lope from General Woodcraft in New London, CT. Phone (860) 444-9663. Our recent order for 200 board feet cost $800; I have no idea whether volume was a factor in pricing. My cabinetmakers report that the stuff is fabulous to work with.
