Nissan outboard alternator output

Post by Lee Kaufman »

Does anyone know what the output should be for a 6hp Nissan outboard alternator. I don't think I am getting the necessary output to charge my battery like it should. I know a lot of you have these motors.

All help appreciated.

Hi Lee,

Alternator output should be 12V, - 60 W. - 5A.

Nissan 6HP Alternator published rating is 12V, 5 amp

My alternator is not regulated and has an output voltage that goes up as speed is increased. Without using an ammeter it is hard to estimate charging rate.

I do measure voltage that goes above 12 volts when connected to the battery as speed is increased. Suggest checking battery voltage with engine stopped and again at running speed. Normal fully charged battery should have 12.6-12.8 volts with no load on battery. As the battery approaches full charge, the measured voltage should be a bit higher than 12.8 volts. With the battery less than full charge the measured voltage should go up noticeably when the engine is run.

Even at the rated output of 5 amps it will take a long time to charge a battery that is significantly discharged. Suggest web site

Solar Panel

Post by Tom M »

I have 6hp Nissan with alt.
Could not confirm if it was charging or not.
Bought a small Solar panel at West Marine.
About $ 60.00 came with alligator clips
I just Hook up in cock pit when not sailing and keeps battery
Topped Off.
panel is small enough that will not over charge
Very Happy/not to concerned any more about alternator
but will check out this winter.
