Kittiwake 23, any experience?
My friend Glen and I are looking a boat for daysailing and weekend cruises on Lake superior. We see a 1977 Kittiwake 23 for sale. It looks a lot like my Typhoon Senior. It is an Alberg design. Does anyone know if Kittiwake is comparable to Cape Dory? Thanks. Dave.

They are sweet little boats. Are they up to the same construction standards of a Cape Dory? No Way

Very close in sailing characteristics
As A Kittiwake owner I can attest to their sailing ability. If you look up the specs on the typhoon senior and kittiwake they are very close in sailing characteristics, size, sail area, speed, etc. Check out

The kittiwake has a plywood core for it's deck and cabin and all the same issues of boats made in the 70's , problems with hull/deck seam leaks, core rot around stanchions, port light leaks, etc. Though she might not be as trimmed out as nicely down below, the hull layup and design is every bit as good as a Cape Dory Typhoon Senior. They are first cousins. Both boats will get you home safely in a real blow though it will be a very wet ride.

is this the one from Good Old Boat?
Are you referencing the Kittiwake for sale in Good Old Boat in Illinois (Jim Wiles)? I called him a few weeks back regarding the boat. I think it is totally redone and in great shape - all the issues that were mentioned of hull-deck leaks, port lights, etc. should be ironed out.
I was thinking about Jim's boat, but found a nice well-restored Kittiwake for $5500 with trailer in Dallas, which is a lot closer to me. I know Jim's boat has been for sale for a long time through some other message boards...I think the original asking price was $10,000 with outboard, and as slowly gone down from there.
