Missing Andy

Like everyone else at the annual meeting, I was disappointed to learn that Andy Vavolotis was not able to deliver a talk to the group. But Dave Perry's presentation was completely fascinating and chock full of really interesting information. (For example, Andy wanted to shorten the name of the company to "Cape;" of the three 45's made, one is still with the orignal owner and two have had two owners. And so on.)

The "first hand" perspective Dave projected from working at Cape Dory gave the talk a real feel of authenticity. I got a lot out of it and, judging from the questions he got from the group, others did too.

I agree, Dave did a great job. He did leave some questions unanswered, though:

Didn't really explain where the two feet can be found in the 30 vs. the 28. (On the question of the added beam in the 30, though, he did point out that you find it in the brochure.)

No insight he might have gleaned from Carl Alberg about wheels vs. tillers.

Totally avoided talking about locking vs. spinning props.

No mention of three blades vs. two, steering in reverse, fully battened mains, anti-critter prop coatings, etc., etc.

Thanks again to Dave and to everyone whose efforts made for a great annual meeting.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend the meeting. Hopefully next time. Dave DOES KNOW about steering in reverse He demonstrated this to us when we sailed with him on an R36. It can be done!

Just wanted to give a big "Thank you" to the Commodore and especially Bob & Ted Vander Wiede who put together a really fun weekend. I really enjoyed the informative and entertaining speakers. The musical entertainment was fun too - even if some of us participating were a little off key!

But I think that the round table breakfast on Sunday was the best idea of all and I hope that it will become a regular feature at our annual meetings.

Thanks a lot to everyone responsible for the weekend - great job!

I want to offer my sincere apologies to Bud and to the CDSOA. Last year at this time it was suggested that, if the national meeting were held in the Northeast maybe Andy would speak to the group. I offered that I could help make that a reality. Obviously, my efforts did not prevail, and the storm warnings at Robinhood Marine Center, where His attention was focused, did. Personally, I think that it was Andy's loss to not be with the wonderful group that was present at the meeting.
I truly enjoyed giving a talk about the Cape Dory Company in Andy's place. The questions were terrific, too, as it is easy for me to pass over topics that may be of interest.
I do know my place though, Neil. I would NEVER want to discuss wheel vs. Tiller, Spinning and locking props, full batten mains, etc. If I did, what would be the purpose of this great message board!! I'll stick to the facts and figures of the Cape Dory history, thanks.
By the way, 1 ft on the bow, 1 foot on the stern. 1 1/2 in. beam on the brochure, only.
And Hulls 1 through 120 (except 13) were 33's, hulls 121 through 147 were 330's. thus 146 boats built from the 33 mold.
And Troy, remember, you can fool some of the people once in a while. ( with the right tide and wind)!

Dave the politically correct diplomat says, quoted above, that he's on the sidelines in two of our most common, uh, discussions. Notice the subtle hint he gives in the placement of his caps, though. Nice "winking," Dave!

I also enjoyed the Manchester meeting and learned a lot from all the speakers. Although I had heard Dave Perry talk about Cape Dories at the Annapolis meeting last year, I picked up still more information about the boats and their history from his presentation last week. Naturally I expected Andy to be there as well but Dave did a great job and should be commended for coming to the rescue at the last minute.

I owe Dave a sincere thanks for arranging the visit I made with my nephew Caleb Hemphill to the Robinhood facility the following Monday morning. Although Dave wasn't there, nor was Andy, he left word with one of his associates, Warren, that we would be visiting and our tour took us through the entire place. We ended up at the warehouse where we both purchased parts: two bronze padeyes and a seacock handle for me and a bronze springhasp for Caleb. For those of you who have never seen the place, it's well worth a visit.

It's pretty embarrassing, but I couldn't remember everyone's names for the captions. Please don't be offended if I didn't get your name right or not at all, I'm simply the world's worst at remembering names (40 lashes with a wet noodle).
