I found the NAPA part number here, in an old thread, and stopped into a local NAPA store. Unfortunately, it's no longer carried and no longer available through their system. They suggested one of the local marine dealers and I'll see if I can get there tomorrow. If I find a mother load of thermostats and/or other parts, I'll let you know.

If the part isn't available at all, how close is close enough if a replacement thermostat is the right size but not exactly the right temperature spec (assuming that's available, which I don't have a clue)?

I have had good luck with Marine Parts Express. They sell genuine Volvo for 10% off retail. For some reason, they don't list this in the common replacement parts for the MD7A section on their web site, but I recall it is about $45. Pricey but not terrible.

I bet if you emailed them, you could get an answer by next business day. They are efficient and ship promptly.

I have no connection with the company.

I would provide the Volvo part number, but my parts manual is on the boat. Will try to get it over the weekend, then you could Google by mfr number to search for a lower price. Many Volvo
Penta parts are about 40% less in UK, but then you have to deal with shipping and risk of loss, etc. Not worth it for just this item.

By the way, NAPA's price for the one they didn't have was $65.00. (Funny, because usually when they don't have them, they're a lot cheaper than te alternative.)

Whenever I take the thermostat housing off and then replace it, I displace the copper pipe "T" and/or the seal that goes up underneath. One of the ways I know the water pump is now working at pressure is that the displaced fitting sprays water everywhere!

I'm not sure if it's the pipe or the seal which is out of place. It's a bear to reach. Any magic method of keeping it/getting it in place?

Although not the thermostat, I do have a temp. sending unit for the MD7A. Years ago the old one failed and I replaced it, apparently there were two different ones for the same engine according to the local Volvo dealer, They sold me the wrong one, I installed it. It did not work. They refused to take it back because I installed and removed it. Then wanted to sell me the correct one for another $75.00. Even though it was their error.. Great PR for them....
Any way that was years ago. although I still hold a grudge against them. All about letting go right?
So the temperature sending unit is sitting in a box . The temp. max is 120*C, next number is 499 Made in Germany 11/17/89
6-24V 3W rated@ 95*C+/-3*C

Strangely enough I replaced the 'stat on our engine at the begining of this season. The boat had not been used for a couple of years when we bought it and the stat was solid and the housing plugged with deposits and goo.

I ordered a new stat, which looked nothing like the old one. However, it works just fine. The old one and the housing spent a couple of days soaking in Coke Cola and came up as clean as new. After a few heat up cool down cycles in a saucepan the old stat is working fine and operates at the temperature stamped on it. It now resides in my spare parts in which, it will stay until in 20 years I throw it out.

As for Neil's question. The leaking pipe seals are a pain. I used some instant gasket from NAPA, the type they put on water pumps. That cured (no pun here) the problem. If you do use this make sure that the material is compatible with your pipe. Next time I'll just clean this stuff up and put some more on. Mind you I really don't want a next time. My longer term plan is to ditch the inboard altogether and use the space more wisely. There's room for a ton of groceries back in there!
