I just recently purchased a Cape Dory 22 and need to replace the drop board in the companion way. Spoke to a shipwright and he had suggested 3 options.......
1.simply replace the single venered drop board with another one just like it....
2. two to three individeual boards that drop in place and overlap........
3. same as #2 above but with the top board being made of smoked Lexan to let in some light...
Anybody have any thoughts on the best way to go?
Thanks in advance

CD 22 - New Drop Boards

Re: CD 22 - New Drop Boards
I had to repair by bottom drop board on my CD27 this spring. It had delaminated. I got a 3/16 thick teak plywood sheet, planed off 3/16
of the old boards (I redid all 3 of them) and epoxied the new
surface on. Sanding and cetol did the rest. Took a few hours (plus
drying time). I also have a lexan drop board that can replace the
bottom 2 boards. Thus I have light only when I want it.
A single board, like you had, is a bit more bulky to store down below
while sailing. And the lexan board can be smaller also.
Just my 2 cents....

Re: CD 22 - New Drop Boards
Option #2....
Replace all three with solid teak. Had the venier on my SS23. You will have to replace it again in time.
Lexan is good as an additive. I have a single sheet for the entire opening for those rainly days aboard. Bought a small sheet from a home supply store and applied a jig saw to it. Lexan is just subject to scratches, etc. but is great for short time use.

On our 1981 CD-22 "Carina", we had the same problem with the original plywood drop board delaminating. We replaced ours with 2 solid teak boards. The bottom board we made a second, duplicate drop board out of clear Lexan.
We mounted compas, knot meter, and depth meter on the clear Lexan drop board. We used the flat boat trailer rubber electrical conectors for the instruments. If it is raining, the top teak board is dropped in. In nice weather you can use the Lexan instrument board or not. Even with the instruments mounted in the lexan board, some light comes in.
good luck,
