Cape Dory 30K info
Hello everyone.
I have been lurking on this board for quite a long time but just joined today. Discounting any unseen problems, by this time next week I should be the new owner of CD 30K Arianna.
I'm looking for info on what dink's other 30K sailors are using and how you are storing them. I'm thinking of a Walker Bay 8 with a sailing rig. Also any words of wisdom and any good sea stories you may have to tell.
I'll be keeping the boat in Mobile Al. at Turners Marine and will be looking forward to meeting other CD sailors in the area.
Also wondering how far other CD 30K's have sailed. I know about FEnix and have heard of a CD 25. What about the 30's and above going around?
One of the many things that swayed me to the Cape Dory was this board and the loyal following of CD owners. The only other board I have found as active as this one is the Tartan owners web sight.
Anyway... I'm glad to be in such good company with such a good boat.
Sincerely
Mark Mills

Welcome aboard Mark (hopefully).
There is a new and active fleet in your area, the Central Gulf Coast Fleet, and they have a cruise coming up in October. See the "Sticky" at the top of the page.
You can click on that link and there you will find the fleet captain's email address (Steve Kuhar). Drop him a line and he or Mike Connell, who has a 30 in Fairhope, will be more than glad to answer local questions and welcome you aboard.
Your comments about the value of this board and this association are a testament to the value both play in the longevity of our vessels and their popularity. If indeed you do end up owning Arianna, then please take a few minutes and join the association. A portion of the dues go to support this wonderful and very valuable web site.
Good Luck on Arianna.

Mark,
I hope that all goes well in finalizing your purchase. You are just across the bay from the biggest hotbed of Cape Dory activity this side of Clear Lake, Texas. The Fairhope Yacht Club has ten Cape Dories including one 30, but it is not a ketch. There are also two more 30s (also cutters) at NAS Pensacola.
We are looking forward to signing you up as a member of the Central Gulf Coast Fleet. If you send me your e mail address I will add you to our mailing list to keep you informed about what we are doing. Feel free to call me anytime at 850 994 5944 if I can help in any way, and again welcome aboard, you will never regret becoming a Cape Dory sailor.

It is with great sadness that I sell her. Age and lamness has crept up on me.
I am happy that a sailor is buying her and not some dude that wants a condo on the bay.
You are already welcoming Seadog to the family---Good on you.
fair winds to all

I have a CD 30K on the Northern Chesapeake Bay. Before I purchased her Last Year she lived in Puerto Rico , SC , and NC. I'm a fan of inflatable dinks but she came with a plastic dink that was stored under
the Main Boom. Cleona is a pretty Sailboat that moves through
the water with grace and speed. I would be happy to give you info
on her.

What kind of hard dingy do you have and how long is it?
I'm also interested in anything you have change or updated that you think I would like to hear about.
As a side note I spent 16 years on the Chesapeake bay before I retired from the Navy. I miss sailing on the bay, It was some of the best days of my life.

Hi Mark,
I have the CD30c in Fairhope mentioned by Steve. "Buster" has flags from about 5 countrys shes visited (previous owner) and a 3rd
place trophy for the Pensacola to Isla Mujueres Race. Club member Larry Macanally sailed his 30 "Intowishin" from Boston to Destin Fl. and just recently to Key west and back...you are getting a boat that you will enjoy in blue water. There was a 30k at FYC that was destroyed by Katrina but the owner I'm sure would enjoy sharing tales of his long distance adventures. I encourage joining the Gulf Coast association..great bunch of people and a pretty hard core Cape Dory group, most of us on at least our second CD. I can assure you, you will never fail to get compliments on how pretty a CD30 is on the water! Come meet the gang at FYC..one of us may know a CD secret that would be useful to you! upgrades
The hard dink is a backwater http://www.plasticboats.com
white dink 7.5 with 3 oars (one spare) - its almost new and I'll
sell it to you for $200 plus shipping. I use a 9' inflatable with a
5hp honda. The backwater would take a 3hp or smaller motor.
Email me at mamccarron@verizon.net and I'll give more info on
my boat ....but for now a few things - Wind gen, propane stove and grill and hot water (on demand), autohelm, depth&speed, manual windlass
solar panel, sears glass mat batteries series 31, perfection paint job.
Happy to fill you in on any of the above.

Marc
I think I'm going to go with the Walker bay dingy right now because I can get a sailing rig for it, and later I will see what I can find for an inflatable. I've also given some thought to getting an inflatable canoe or kayak to save space and also be something I can cover a lot of ground with.
When I was on the Chesapeake bay I had a Nutshell sailing pram and loved it. It was stable as a rock even with 20+ knots of wind. It's is so nice to just sail around an anchorage early in the morning and do a little fishing or exploring.
If I go to Mexico or the islands later I know I will need an inflatable with outboard to get back and forth and haul water and supplies but for now I think the Walker bay will do, even if a little of a pain to store.
Buck
Tell me more about Fairhope. I'm packing up to move right now and can't find my atlas but I don't have Turner Marine written in stone. It would be nice to be where the Cape Dory action is. Can I live aboard at Fairhope and how much is slip rent?
