The biggest disadvantage to locating dome anywhere other than on the mast; it's in the way and reduces cockpit area more than present. I have cruised over 30,000 miles with radar on mast. On present CD36, approximately 20' above the deck. On Pearson ketch I had, I mounted it on the mizzen mast about 18' up. Have never had a problem night or day. Have owned both 16mile and 24mile radars. Moving at an average speed of 6 knots I rarely use more than 8 miles unless single handing down the coast at night, then check 12 mile for traffic, set 45 minute timer and go to sleep for 45 minutes (4 miles) and repeat. In dead fog near Newport we steared by radar with heavy traffic and no problem. Operated a Boat U.S. Towboat for several years in N.C. and many times only had radar for guidance, no problem once you get used to it.
