New (to me) CD22--need Bimini info
We have a new to us CD22. She is so cute. Beautiful teak inside-- needs some work on the exterior teak-- but we will get it done. Inside is perfect with new cushions and teak in pristine condition.
I does not have a bimini. I was wondering if anyone has any plans or measurements.
Also, the anchor is just sitting on the foredeck. It really needs a roller but the headstay will have to be moved or somehow changed-- any ideas?

Best Wishes
Hi Trapper,
I want to welcome you into the Cape Dory world. Congratulations on your new(to you) CD 22. I wish you many years of pleasure with it.
On another note. What size and weight anchor are you planning to use? I guess what I'm driving at is do you need a roller for a 22?
I can't help you with the Bimini. From what I understand, it sure is handy to use one down there in those southern waters.
Best of luck. Enjoy,
O J

Congratulations
on the new to you CD 22. You will soon discover the beauty of these fine vessels.
I cannot help you on the bimini or the anchor situation, but I can recommend that (IF you have not already done so) you join the CDSOA. It is a great organization with a host of benefits from discounts to supporting this site. This site, more so than even the quality of construction of our beloved vessels, contributes significantly to the value of our boats. Just search the archives or ask the question and typically (although not necessarily always) another owner (or owners) has dealt with the same issue.
So IF you are not already a member, please take the time to complete the new membership form (download at http://www.capedory.org/cdsoapp2.pdf) and join today. You will not regret this decision and a portion of your membership dues supports this wonderful and informative web site.
Fair winds and good luck with the new CD 22.

Congrats on your CD22......
Hey Trapper,
Ditto what OJ and Bill said.
Your post confused me. I own a CD22 and I've seen a few others and one of the great features is a bronze bow fitting that has a anchor roller and bow chocks with pins.
Your CD22 doesn't have this?
How is your anchor secured on the fore deck?
If your CD22 does not have a bow roller maybe it has been modified. Consider posting pictures. I'm very interested.

CD 22 Biminni
We also sail a CD22 in SE Florida and get cooked by the sun. I have been trying for a year to rig some kind of a biminni with no luck. I'm afraid the boat is just too small to allow it. If you or anyone else finds a solution we would be gratefull to share.
The boat is indeed a sweet boat to sail. We have owned various boats over the years including several Cape Dorys, and the 22 is by far our favorite especially for daysailing.
Good sailing Ron Brassord Lighthouse Point Fl.

CD 22 bimini
My CD 22 has a dodger that includes an awning that zips on and streches over the cockpit over a small pole attached to the backstay. You can't sail with it on(not with the main, anyway) but it would provide shade at the dock or anchorage.

Thanks for the posts everyone. Barfwinkle, I am going to join within the next couple of days. After this post, I am heading home. Gary M, I will try to get pics next weekend. We are inland and the boat is on the coast --Hopefully we can get down next weekend. We have only moved her from one slip to another. Have not been sailing. She has a 8hp honda 2001 and it needs an impeller so we have to fix that before we can go out. Otherwise, everything looks great!
From my recollection, the bow has a large area of teak with a bronze fitting that holds the head stay and two bronze cleats on either side. But there is no roller. There is a claw anchor just sitting on the deck with its chain in the locker. The head sail appears to be cut high -- way off the deck so I guess it would probably not catch the anchor.
Has anyone tried moving the main traveler forward-- say over the companion way or in front of it so that a bimini could extend aft?
Also, the running rigging is kind of funny. The main halyard runs up the front of the mast then out the back to hook on the main sail. I am wondering if it is missing a block off of the mast? The top and lift runs up the back of the mast and down to the boom. There does not appear to be enough room for the back stay, top and lift and another block for the main to fit on the back? I don't see why it would not work like it is-- just different.
Again, thanks for the posts.

We have a bimini we are not using
We have a bimini that we do not plan to use. It is dark green. (Not my color.) But I was holding onto it in case I decided to use it as a pattern at some time in the future.
If you would be interested in paying the shipping back and forth, I would be happy to let you use it as a pattern to make one. I do not have the metal frame, just the canvas. I can't get the insert picture thing to work, but I would be glad to send you a picture of the bimini (pre-Katrina) via email.
Let me know.
Becky

CD22D awning
I cannot help with the bimini, but here's a photo of an awning I just had made up for my CD22D by a local marine canvas company.
It's the typical over the boom design with telescopic poles fore and aft, a zipper to go around the topping lift, and several loops on top as well as a large adjustable loop, if you're inclined to use the main halyard. The fabric is Sunbrella.
It also has a clip that attaches to a fitting on the backstay. It only takes a few minutes to put up and provides great sun protection while at the mooring.

Hello Trapper:
I am interested to learn if your CD 22 is the same CD 22 I looked at in Charleston, S.C. in May 2005. The CD 22 I looked at was Hull Number 12. She was in very nice condition. She had a 2002 Honda 8 HP 4 stroke. I thought at the time that a 8 HP O/B was too much weight for a CD 22, especially where I would be sailing her - Biscayne Bay. The owner said he needed the HP because of sea conditions getting in and out of where he was docked.
I talked with him some time ago and he said he had sold the CD 22 with the O/B in October 2005.
By the way, for what it is worth from a tadpole sailor who does not yet own a Cape Dory, I agree with Ron Brassord's comments that a CD 22 does not have the deck surface area for a Bimini. Also, from the CD 22s I have looked at, the Bimini arms may interfere with operation of the port and starboard winch handles whether the Bimini is deployed or stored. The Bimini arms cross in front of (or in back of) the winch and prevent 360 turns on the winch handles.
I looked at a CD 22 near Sarasota, Florida several months ago. It had a Bimini installed. The arms of the Bimini were attached to the tops of the port and starboard coamings with small U shaped brackets. The screws went into the top of each coaming (no side support at all) and the sides of the brackets were only 1/4" to 1/2"-again no lateral support. If I had bought her (we could not come close on a price), I would have quickly removed the Bimini. I thought it was dangerous. Other than that, that CD 22 in Sarasota was absolutely Bristol. In hindsight, I should have bitten the bullet and bought her. Yet another mistake in my search history. Glad to see you have not made the many mistakes I have made.
Congratulations on your purchase.

Was the anchor roller a option?
Trapper,
Your discribing the bronze fitting I have less the anchor roller. I never knew Cape Dory had two different fittings.
Take your time fitting your boat with a roller, there are many options and you want the finish product to look as good as your boat does.
BTW, I think you're really going to enjoy your CD22.
Congradulations.

Gary M, I would love to see a pic of yours. I will take some of mine next weekend.
Sea Hunt, she is hull 12. Apparently, her owner abandoned her and the marina had her sold at auction. She is beautiful and I feel very lucky to have her. The bright work needs some attention but otherwise she is in great shape.
I also thought the honda was a bit heavy so I bought a nissan 9.8 two stroke but it didn't work on the motor mount so we are just going to go with the honda. The honda needs a new impeller. Hope to have that fixed by next weekend. What was he asking for her?

Wow, you have no idea how lucky you are. When I saw her in 2005 she was in very good condition. Assuming the "abandoned" owner did not trash her, she should be in good to very good condition.
The owner who sold her in October 2005 told me he sold her for $9,000 - the asking price. I have no way of knowing if that number is accurate. It was (and is) a little high for a CD 22. He told me the buyer (young - early 20s) was from Ecuador. He said he saw the guy and his father out sailing her a few weeks after the sale.
I am amazed he just "abandoned" her.
You bought a CD 22 at auction I am seriously thinking about "abandoning" my search for a Cape Dory. It is just too $#@!$& depressing to hear a story like that.
Again, though, congratulations on a great get and
