solvent for cleaning up blue masking tape

Post by JSS »

Would anyone like to recommend a solvent/cleaner to clean up the few bits and shreds of scotch blue tape (2080) and adhesive that didn't come off the fiberglass cleanly when I finished varnishing the teak.

Lacquer thiner works great, dont get it on you though its horribly poisonous. Also dont smoke while using it or you might get rid of more than the tape.

Lamp oil works best of all the things that I've tried. It also doesn't seem to be terribly toxic.

Cleaning up masking tape adhesive

Post by Peter Kozup »

My wife used Goo-gon which is specifically for cleaning up adhesive on Katy Too and it worked beautifully. It's readily available and probably less expensive than some of the other stuff, especially if the other stuff has 'marine' or 'boat' printed on the label.

Biodegradable answer

Cheap, creamy peanut butter, put on and left overnight, works well. Wash it off with detergent and water. The little fishes love it.
