What extent was balsa core used for the 28 FB Cruiser below the waterline?

Any problems with water infiltration above or below?

Jim, I'm not familiar with that particular boat, but as far as I know Cape Dory did not use balsa in any hulls or below water areas. It was used in decks and cabin tops for the light weight and strength it afforded. The hulls were generally laid up with uni-directional roving (stronger than the usual roving) and are solid layups.

Don't know about the 28 but FWIW here's some info on my CD 30 flybridge.

I just replaced some of the plastic mushroom through-hulls (just above the waterline) with bronze ones. I was surprised to see that the hull is indeed balsa cored at that point! Unfortunately they did not seal the hole with epoxy before installing the mushroom, but there was no sign of moisture.

The hull bottom is solid - I saved the core when a transducer was installed and it's 3/8" of solid glass. Don't know for sure where the balsa core starts but I would hope it's above the waterline.
