Kenner Kittiwake vs. (Ryder)Sea Sprite 23

These two Alberg designs are similar to the CD22. Can anyone tell me about their relative sailing (pointing, light/heavy air performance), construction and maintenance merits?

The Sea Sprite is a wonderful boat

I sailed Sea Sprite #301 for 18 years and you'll be hard pressed to find a better sailing 22'6" boat...fairly large moderate aspect sail plan...heavy keel...and a long, deep non-self bailing cockpit (the early designs had a smaller cabin) made for the perfect day sailer...fast,stiff,comfortable,fun and gorgeous. My boat was not built by Ryder...Sea Sprites were built by several different companies over the years.

I looked at a Kenner last year for a project boat. I was not the least bit impressed with the construction of the coach house. Very thin glass (IMHO). The hull looked okay, and I liked the interior layout, but I have never sailed one. The seller is also the guy who taught me to sail and he loved the way the Kenner handled. FWIW

Never have sailed either. Both have great lines.

Good luck
Bill

I have you beat by 2 years. Ive owned Sea Sprite #507 Since 1980. 1972 boat. What you are describing is the Sea Sprite Daysailer model They coexisted with the weekender model that I have in the 1960's. Kinda like the difference between an Electra and an Ensign. I sent away for the original line drawings of the SS and the daysailer version was included. I previously didnt know that it existed. I am curious if many were made as I have never seen one.

My wife and I are the former owners of a beautiful 1977 Sea Sprite (sail #650). She was a beautiful boat and sailed like a dream. She is can still be seen on a mooring in Hingham Harbor (Mass.) I can't think of another small boat that I would rather own. I think that the SS23 was one of Alberg's best designs.

Can you give me informationon the Electra and the Ensign? I remember seeing several Ensigns moored off of Buck Harbor when I sailed for week there. They were very attractive boats.
