Info re; CD Typhoons
I just started looking for a CD Typhoon and found a 1974 Weekender that has been recently upgraded with new sails , lines and awlgrip.Since I have just started looking, I dont have much to go on for price, but the asking price of $5800 seems quite high to me. Could some one give me a good price range for Typhoons in this age bracket. It looks well maintained.
PS- I found your website by accident and it sure looks great.

I found a 1979 real good shape
The CD I found is located in Centerport Long Island and it is selling for $5,900. I spoke with the Broker and he told me he would sell it for $2,100 less then the price listed. Small boat market is down.

The point being what are you willing to pay for a Typhoon priced low ,and in need of new sails and upgrades?, or should you pay a little extra for a boat in fine condition. Either way you will probable end up spending the same in time and money to achive all the work; in time and material that has been put into the boat you are looking at. I have a Typhoon 1972, Hull # 27 that I have spent many hr's restoring and upgrading ,believe me, you or my wife don't want to know what I have spent on this fine vessel (all the new bronze hardware arrives next week).I do know that to buy one new would cost a lot more ! But then that would take the fun out of the whole project. Have the boat checkd outby a third party, and if all is fair,in my humble opinion the price dose not seem out of line for a well restored Typhoon.
Have fun sailing her. BOB

Good luck with your search. When I started looking for a Typhoon, the only restrictions I placed on it was that I did not want any serious problems to fix. In particular I wanted to stay away from one that had delamination, a cabin top that was indented or one with serious rigging problems. I found one that was priced for $2500. Now I have old sails to potentially replace ($400-$800), the nonskid needs to be redone ($200-$500), oh there are a few scratchs on the hull ($200 - $500), the motor isn't very good, but I don't ever sail with one anyway; there's one coaming board that should be replaced ($100-$200). One of these days I really will do all of this, but right now I have just enjoyed sailing her. As the other responders suggested, a well restored one is going to bring a pretty good price, and probably should. One thing for sure, I think you will find the Typhoon a great little boat to sail.

Early this year I purchasrd a 1979 CD Typhoon. I picked her up in Texas and trailered her back to Minnesota (Yes I was taken in by th CD voodoo). I paid $5800 for a boat the owner was asking over $7,000.
The boat: New main, jib and spinnaker. All new running riggings. Newer Nissan 2.5 short shaft. Beautiful EZ Loader galvanizes trailer.
What I over looked:
Bad paint job. $1,000 worth of Awlgrip paint (still in the box).
Old blisters painted over. Sandblasted all old bottom paint, bad gelcoat/blisters. (This was an easy job; big mess but easy).
$100 - $200 in filler and sealers/paint.
Teak in poor shape. Pulled all wood, Replaced toe rail. All wood back on after the paint job.
Lifelines/stantons wern't bedded properly. I pulled them, filled the holes and plan on leaving them off. The Typhoon is much more beautiful with out all the lines cluttering her up.
Clem.. My problem was I took her for a ride before I gave her a good go over. I was hooked when I stepped onto her. In hindsight I should have had a survey done.
I spend 8-10 hours a day in fromt of a computer (CD web page only accounts for 1/2 an hour). It sure is nice to come home and work on my boat.
This spring I will launch "Lions Whelp". New Jade Green Awlgrip paint, working Bronze prot holes and fresh teak.
Yes it has been worth the time and money.

Re: I found a 1979 real good shape
HOLD EVERYTHING!The CD I found is located in Centerport Long Island and it is selling for $5,900. I spoke with the Broker and he told me he would sell it for $2,100 less then the price listed. Small boat market is down.
I saw that very same boat, now nestled next to a huge sloop on Rt. 25A. I told the broker that that particular CD-19 had many problems, like a soft back deck and loose mainsheet block mount, holes in the cabin top, a sagging cabin top due to over-tightened shrouds, a gouged out transom(stbd. side), as well as numerous cosmetic flaws on the wood work and hull. Also if memory serves, the hull number (320) is about a '72 or '73 model. The broker origonally advertised it as a 1977-78 model.
Some of the folks I spoke with on this website valued this boat at about $1000, given the cost to repair and rebuild the back deck, prop up the cabin top, and replace the wood work.
Given the benefit of a doubt, the boat has a full electrical system with a panel board below. But it is not worth $5900, or even $3800.
Any questions, drop me an e-mail, I'd be glad to tell you more about my "survey" of this fine yacht. There's another CD-19 at that yard, behind the main building, by the Bayliner sales offices, that has been drydocked all summer, and is in fine shape. It's hull is #1913 (1983) and seems to have been forgotten by it's owner. Seems a shame, it's a real beauty.
