Cabin Sole Hatch ??s

Hello to All

I am in the midst of replacing my cabin sole and want to add a larger hatch to allow access to all the space under the sole. When I do so, I want it to be a "positive locking" hatch. I am not too sure what type of hardware to use?

Any suggestions? The hatch will be roughly 11x12 inches so I figure I will need two latches of some type?

Hi Bill,

Here's what we use aboard Realization (ours are brass):



The latch goes at one end of the hatch and you use a wooden "cleat" at the other end which slips beneath the floor. Even with the boat inverted, the hatches cannot fall out (hopefully that'll never happen). I'll ask Bruce to take some photos of our hatches for you.

I looked at that type of latch in the WM catalog. D*&% thats another boat unit. Where did you get yours? I'll check and see what Defender has as well.

Tell bruce hey and the pics are not really necessary, unless you are just showing off Realization's "new interior"

Defender is $20 cheaper than the same think in WM!!! And no sails tax I'll look elsewhere as well.

I know Jamestown Distributors carries those latches as well as some others. Cant tell you how they compare price wise.

Bruce snapped a few photos yesterday while I was applying the 3rd and final coat of Ultimate Sole to Realization's cabin sole. Anyway, click on the photo below to see a few more pics.

I recommend nice big hatches to fully take advantage of the space below the floor. They also allow us good access to the electrical wiring and hoses that run beneath the floor -- something that was nearly impossible before we added them. The 2x8's you see running athwartship are the floorjoists. Note that there is no fiberglass pan in the CD32.

I hope nobody's blinded by the shine of the table. I used Ultimate Sole on the table, companionway ladder and the cabin sole. The rest of the wood has been newly refinished with Minwax Hemlsman Spar Urethane Satin.

So Cathy, I only see one latch per hatch? That tells me you secured the other end, but not how you secured them? Please elaborate?

You only use one locking latch per hatch. At the other end of the hatch is a wooden cleat. The photo below shows the underside of the hatch and the wooden cleat. Click on it to see some more photos of the floor, hatches, locking latches and wooden cleats.
