Volvo MD7A exhaust riser/mixer/lift muffler

Post by John Friday »

We are looking for the original manufacturer of the riser/mixer/lift
muffler assembly used on Volvo MD7A diesel engines installed on Cape
Dory 28's and 30's. Even though the assembly is painted Volvo green and appears to have been made by the engine manufacturer, the Technical Help Department at Volvo says they didn't produce the assembly and cannot tell us who did. Because the assembly has to fit into the exhaust flange AND bolt onto the back end of the engine, having it custom-made may prove to be a little dicey. Any help in finding the component's original manufacturer or advice regarding a direct replacement will be greatly appreciated.

I had the muffler replaced on my CD30 a couple months ago. I found a guy in Maryland that could make the muffler for me out of metal like the original but instead I opted to buy one of the fiberglass types and my marina installed it for me. The cost of the muffler was $170.90 (total parts...may include some pipe or hose or screws or something). The labor, of course, will vary.

I haven't had a single problem except that some of the fiberglass wrap they put on the exhaust elbow kind of 'burned' initially. I thought the boat was on fire. After the stuff 'seasoned' it stopped burning (and smelling). Made for a few anxious moments as I tried to sail the boat while sitting over the companionway with a fire extinguisher in my hand pointed at the engine. Other than that, flawless.

John,
Vetus DenHouden makes a variety of water lift mufflers and related exhaust parts. They likely will have one to fit your engine's requirements. You can get them at: vetus.com
