Cabin Sole Query

Post by barfwinkle »

Hello Everyone

What a GREAT day in Oklahoma. Winds 20 kts WNW, temp 80°, clear "cold front" blue skies.

Anyway, I have a cabin sole question, almost a Poll type question. It will bring forth thoughts of heresy from the diehards, but.

I have access to a master cabinet maker and I am about to make the move to replace/update Rhapsody's cabin sole. The question become, do I go back with Teak/Holly Marine Ply, or use a new faux Teak/Holly laminate that just goes on top of the existing plywood.

Comments please?

My sole is in need of replacing and when I go to do it I will remove it completely and the replacement will be marine ply with the teak laid on top of no less then 1/8", preferably 1/4". The sole simply takes far too much abuse for such thin veneer to stand up to.

I agree that the veneer plywoods aren't really up to the job. I replaced my sole this spring due to an unfortunate bilge-flooding incident. I ripped everythign out and replaced with a Meranti subfloor and red birch household flooring. My sole no longer has any sponginess, and I can sand and refinish as necessary for a looooong time before I use up the 3/4 inch thickness of the flooring.

It isn't traditional, but I think its a nice look.

I think the new laminates are great, even flooring like that made by Pergo would look nice on a yacht. Why does it have to be teak and holly anyway? Have you seen the new Island Packets? They're now using a wood product called Lyptus instead of teak that's made of plantation grown readily renewable Eucalyptus. If you subscribe to DIY Boat Owner magazine, there's actually a photo of the stuff on page 2 of the most current issue -- Issue #2 2007.

There are also non-wood alternatives like Lonseal (Loncourt and Lonwood flooring) or PlasTEAK. If you like the cabin sole in the newer Catalina Yachts, they use a product manufactured by Amtico International.

I redid the cabin sole in our '27 with solid mahogany & holly. The project was written up in the Sept/Oct 2005 issue of good old boat.

It's a bit of work but if you want the traditional look and lots of wood for future refinishing it's worth looking at.

I know they claim this can be used in bathrooms but I would be concerned with it's use in a marine application. I don't think the composite base was engineered to be waterproof, - it may be resistant but that is a big difference.

Question about a Teah & Holly Plywood supplier, Please r

Post by barfwinkle »

Does anyone have any experience with Boulter Plywood Corp, http://www.boulterplywood.com/. This place is in Somerville, MA.

So far they are the only people that will sell me a 1/2 sheet of teak & Holly and will even cut down further (and still in the size I need) to reduce the cost of shipping. Also, I assume that they can and will some how protect the teak and holly surface? wouldnt you think?????

The faux flooring route is about to go by the wayside as it comes in 60" widths and then you have to buy the necessary linear footage. In light of the fact that at the widest point the sole of a 25D is only 16 1/2" I would be waisting a strip of this stuff 3' x 7'.

TIA for any replies.

I've used them several times.

Bill:

I did this job last spring on my boat and I got the teak/holly faced ply from Boulter. It came out great. Previously, I bought some teak lumber from them which I used to laminate up a new bowsprit. I use them because they are located nearby, but they have a reputation for being a little pricey. If you are going the mail order route anyway, there may be cheaper sources. Check the Wooden Boat message board. There are threads about lumber sources there all the time.

On my boat, there was 1/4" teak/holly faced ply glued on top of 1/2" fir ply which was glued and screwed to the fiberglass cabin sole. I elected to replace it with a single piece of 3/4" teak/holly faced ply glued and screwed to the sole.

Let me know if you have any questions about the details.

Hi Stan

Well I have called/visited (on the web) about a half dozen wood speciality places and thus far, the one in Somerville is the only one that will sell me 1/2 sheet. Not only that they will cut it into two pieces (6' & 2') and then they can ship it UPS.

It just so happens that is almost a perfect cut, so unless I can find something else soon, I am going with Boulter. My master cabinet maker is heading down river at the end of July and I want him to do the work. And we intend to add another sole hatch at well, soooo.

Thanks Stan.. Fair Winds

Boulter

I have done business with Boulter once - extremely satisfied. They shipped me a beautiful piece of teak, cut to order for a coaming replacement, at a very reasonable price. It came very quickly and was exactly what I ordered. I am looking for some additional materials and they will be my first call.

By the way, when you're looking for replacement stuff for your Cape Dory, don't forget to check the "Where to Look" section of this web site.

For teak suppliers:
  1. Scroll to the top of any page on the message board and click on the CDSOA logo or the CDSOA link. That'll take you to our home page.
  2. From the home page, use the menus and select "Where to Look" followed by "Parts & Supplies", then "Teak Lumber & Plywood".
Here's a QuickLink to "Teak Lumber & Plywood":
