Nylon Water Tanks

Post by Michael Stephano »

While cruising with the family this weekend I noticed the bilge pump cycling. On further investigation I found a crack at the vent on the strbd water tank. I glommed it up with life caulk to get us through but would like to repair it correctly. Anyone worked with nylon before? How do I repair this crack?

Fancy that. I am going through the same process, except that in this case the crack was in the bottom, so I'm going to write off the tank and get a new one. In my 36, the tank is a Kracor 1-6255. Kracor is still in business after lo, these many years. Special order through West Marine or whomever. The tank was apparently a custom design for Cape Dory, so definitely not cheap.

Michael, Life Caulk won't hold. I repaired mine with 5200. It's the only thing that really sticks to plastic. I sanded the shine off with sandpaper cleaned it good and then put applied the 5200. I think this happens because when the boat is heeled things work back and forth a little and the spot where the hose connects is a "hard spot" therefore the stress is on that fitting for the whole tank. I don't know what part of the country you are in, but there used to be and probably still is a plastic tank manufacturer in the Long Beach,CA area that will make any size or shape tank for you for a reasonable price. Check the yellow pages (Or the internet). If you decide you need a new one.

Whatever you use (Marine-Tex, 3M 5200, hot glue, etc.) check product labelling and make sure that once it has cured it is not toxic and won't leach into the water.
