A Case for OEM Oil Filters

I was using a nationally well known brand of oil filters on my Yanmar 3GM30F, left over from the PO. Always, the oil turned black within the first hour of running the engine, which I understand is quite normal for diesels.

Anyway, this spring, I changed oil and used the Yanmar oil filter. I'm using the same brand of oil - but now after running well more than 5 hours, the oil still looks clean and clear. The only difference is the oil filter. But the oil looks dramatically cleaner.

By the way, my engine (a '99 model) has about 3350 hours on it. The PO made annual trips to the Caribbean for about 6 years. The engine runs like a top.
