I'am pondering the noise (squeal) when transmission is in reverse, had earlier questions re; vibrations. have gone down via lazerette what a squeeze at 6'3", lets see entered with a counterclockwise corkscrew manuver....now to get back out. seriously though checked all motor mounts for correct torque and many others i could manage. i have a copy of the volvo manual md7a/b that tells in detail how to rebuild the engine but doesn't have any info. on the transmission. question: I've found the filler for oil on transmission but no dipstick or overflow outlet at least not that i'am aware of. specific kind and amount of oil is posted on transmission discussions (searchmode) i want to change the transmission oil but am stuck ( no pun intended) as to step by step procedure. this is my first time at this so swallow my pride if i had an instruction sheet i would read it, but hope you folks out there may help. motor mounts seem really stiff, still has rubber though. may install new ones this spring. i'am not sure what kind of transmission it is a hurth, volvo or what. cd30 is an 82 #248

Re: transmisson cd30 volvo
I'm not sure which Volvo engine you have but if you have the MD 7(a) (as is in my CD28) the reverse gear box is located directly behind the engine. It is accessible by reaching over the top of the engine. If I can do it, you can. On the top of the gear box is the dipstick. It is not an ordinary dipstick (that would be too easy). It is a dipstick that resembles a 3/4 inch bolthead from above. You need a wrench to loosen it. Then you can unscrew it by hand and remove the dipstick, which is only a couple of inches long. Caution: be sure to attach a piece of rope to the wrench you use and tie the bitter end somewhere so that if you drop the wrench, it can be pulled out of the bilge with ease.

Hi,
If you have the CD30, then you also have the V-Drive, which means then that the transmission and V-Drive are located in front of the engine..facing the bow.
The transmission dip stick is a little 3 in. long extension on the end of a hex nut..about 1 1/4 in. across. The oil to use is straight 30 weight, CD rated engine oil. Change this oil out once a year regardless of how clean it looks.
Good Luck,
