Engines for CD25

Post by Jim Stull »

I am going to purchase a new motor for a CD25.
During periods of long calms or possibly to move away from in-coming storm on Lake Erie, significant motoring could be required.
I realize that there have been several messages in the past on this subject as I discovered after doing a search. I was about to settle on the 8 HP Honda 4 stroke before I read the message about the lack of sufficient space for this motor. I would prefer a 4 stroke motor for its longer range per fuel tank as well as quiter operation. I would be willing to do some practical modifications to make it fit. (Move the motor mounting forward perhaps?)
I would be most grateful for what other owners have found to work well (as well as not so well.)
Thanks
Jim

Jim,
I've used a 15hp long shaft Johnson for 20 years. Great motor with only one repair in 20 years. But if I was replacing I would look to a 4 stroke for quieter operation. I've not found fuel consumption to be a big problem. I can run 8 to 10 hours on a 6 gallon tank, and I carry 2 of those. But it is noisier than I would like. I went with a 15 horse because it is the same size and weight as the 10. The only difference is in the carburator. I moved my bracket forward by adding teak shims where the teak mount attaches to the metal L brackets. I don't know if that would gain you enough room. If you can't fit the 4 stroke you can't go wrong with an OMC. They will run practically forever. I wouldn't be too worried about a used one. But you should get a power prop for it and a reverse thrust kit. You would also want to get the idle relief exhaust out of the compartment. Good luck with the Honda but if you need any more info on the Johnson or Evinrude idea, drop me an E mail. Jerry

Hi Jim,
I have a 9.9 HP 2-stroke. It enough power for where I sail. Cruising World and Practical Sailor just did a review of 4-stroke /2-stroke engines. If I were buying a new engine today I would buy a 4-stroke and find a way to make it fit. They are quieter, use almost have the fuel as a 2-stroke, and more reliable.

Have you bought your CD25 yet or are you still looking?

good luck
