Does any one own a mizzen stay sail for this boat. And if you do could you provide me with some basic measurements.
Luff length and angle to deck
Leach length
Foot length
I hope someone can help. I am having a hard time visualizing the arrangement and would like to have a mizzen stay sail on board.
Want to sell yours?

Mizzen Staysail

Post by Olli Wendelin »

Michael,

I don't have one yet, but my 1977 CD Manual shows many sails on the sailplans which later manuals dropped out. I will e-mail you a copy of the sailplan. For the mizzen stay sail, leech length is 20'-6", foot length is 18'-0", and sail area is 180 sq ft. The tack attaches near the main aft lower shroud and the clew attaches to the end of the mizzen boom.

The sail must be lowered and reset each time you tack.

Michael,
As Olli discribed, the 1977 CD30 owners manual shows the mizzen staysail on the sailplan drawing with 2 of the three measurments. I scaled the drawing and with the third number ordered a 1.5 oz. mizzen staysail through Bacon & Assoc. (within 2-3 inches -over- of each required lengths.)
In addition to Olli's comments on the tack and clew, I snap the clew onto a lifeline just forward or the rear lower mainmast shroud (untill I fix a deck fitting.) The head is raised on the halyard on the forward edge of the mizzen mast on the leeward side of the split backstay. You will have to adjust the lines to prevent chafe. Also, if wind is aft of the beam, keep an eye on the wind pressure on the sail (1.5 oz. for light winds only.)
It can be used tacking downwind, however the wind force so far aft seems to cause excessive yaw. I think it's most effective use is on a reach in light air.
On the first use on a broad reach, the mizzen staysail added 1 knot to boat speed!! :-)

This weekend I sailed with my new/old recut mizzen staysail and although it is not as big as the one on the drawings drew well enough to make a difference. Over the winter I will have a proper one cut.
