Wing & Wing with Club-footed Jib (CD28)

Post by Evan Kramer »

I'm a fairly new owner of a CD28. On return from Galveston last weekend, we were running wing and wing and making nice way, but the club-footed jib kept swinging back and forth. I think the natural chop of the bow, rather than my bad helmsmanship, was causing the jib to collapse. It didn't seem to effect my speed much (although I lost about 2 knots if I centered the jib), but it did bug me and make a lot of noise. Have others encountered the same problem? If so, what is the best way to keep the jib out - rig some type of pole like you would with any other boat or lead a line aft from the end of the jib boom? Help.

By the way, while in Galveston, I found another CD28 at a marina in Offats Bayou. Her name was Connamara, and she appeared to be of 1976ish vintage and looked like she had been doing some long cruises. I wish the owners had been aboard - would have loved to take a peek inside.

You can pole it out like any other jib/genoa. Or, you can rig a preventer from the jib boom to the rail.
