Bronze Maintenance

Post by Duncan Maio »

The bronze portholes on "Remedy," our CD27, were badly corroded when we got her this summer.

The exterior came clean with lots of abrasive scrubbing. Is there a cleaner, solvent-type method for cleaning bronze that would be easier and less messy for the interior?

Ditto on Bronze

I also would like to know of a clean and neat method of removing green
corossion from the interior side of the ports!
I use ABI bronze cleaner on the exterior bronze and it works great but it is to messy of a technique for below decks.
I use Forespars "Lanocote" lubricant and corossion guard on the exterior bronze, wiped on and well wiped off ( just a thin film remains so it isn't greasey to the touch ) and it works great as a protectant! Lanocote is available from West Marine, use the paste not the spray. Paste may have to be special ordered.

Bronze Feedback - all ideas welcome!

Post by John »

With all the Cape Dory's out there someone must have some good ideas
or methods on cleaning the interior side of the ports. Doesn't anyone
know of a great method of removing the green build up from the port
holes? Looking forward to some great ideas.......Thanks

Does anyone know where a person can have a replica of the plastic
oval hull I.D. plaque cast in bronze using the original as a model?

Gosh, I must be strange, I'm totally satisfied with that wonderful green patina that the bronze assumes after only the right vintage of time. I'd sure hate to mess it up! Imagine if they polished the Statue of Liberty? Just not the same, I don't think (grin).

I'd give a try at Spartan Marine to see about that bronze casting nameplate. They used to offer them as a regular thing, we've got a friend with a CD30 that got one some years back. I am sure the molds are still available.

Try calling Bristol Bronze @ 401-625-5224. They do something called "investment casting" which is just what you are asking for.
AS I recall, the only catch might be the type of plastic the original is made of. But they say they can duplicate pretty much anything for short money.

I also do not mind the green bronze on the inside of the ports, but my husband hates it. So I use the lazy housewives remedy for cleaning brass - catsup. Just smear it on with your fingers, wait a while and wipe it off, then rinse with a damp cloth and dry.
