Was a CD30 designed 1975 or earlier?

Post by Will Angus »

There is a Regatta that has a class for boats designed in 1975 or earlier, and I would like to participate in that class. What determines the year a boat was designed, and when was the CD30 designed? I really appreciate your facts or thoughts. -W

I know they were built between 1976 and 1986.

If you have a Virginia Title, registatration, or if it is documented, it should answer your question. What race are you entering in Deltaville?

I'm thinking it might be fun and definitely a good cause.

Documentation will say when it was built I think he is asking for when it was designed. Not sure how one would find that out, though it would make sense that it would be designed in 75 since they began being built in 76, but I have no idea how you could prove that or find out for sure.

It is a good race! For A Good Cause!

I do no not think they are judging the boats from the year they where designed. But...I do belive that they have a Cruising Class...
and if you had 3 or 5 Cape Dorys (30'), you might have a class.

cd 30'

Post by VidaliA »

I have been told by the crew at RMC that the cd 30 was built off the same mold as the cd 28 whith one foot fore and aft added. That makes me think that they had something to do with the design. I also imagine that the design that the cd28 was modeled after is much older around John Aldens designing days. I think he was the original designer of the style.
Well maybe this helps.

He is inquiring about being able to enter in the "classic" class, thus the importance of a design year here.

IMO it is more accurate to think of the CD 30 as a CD 28 with about one foot grafted into the middle and about six inches tacked onto each end. Hence the 1,000 lb. (approx. 10%) increase in displacement. In any event, does anyone know the full hull i.d. no. for any of the early five-window ketches. Even if they were deemed 1976 models, they still might have been built in late 1975.

Will,

I have the original Cape Dory sales brochures for 1976. Both the individual flyer and the catalog list the CD 30 Ketch as "New for 1976" with a base price of $28,990. It stands to reason that if the 30 was in full production with underway photos in the 1976 brochures, it had to be designed in 1975 or earlier. I took delivery of my 1982 model CD25D, hull # 5 in November of 1981 to give you an idea of lag time between model year and production.

Hi Will,

The first Cape Dory 30 was built in 1976. The Cape 30 (also built by Cape Dory) was first built in 1972.

Don't forget to browse our entire web site. There's lots of info here, including the specs of most of the models and when they were manufactured.

Start by visiting our home page. Just scroll to the top of the page and click on the CDSOA logo or the CDSOA link. From there, use the menu which is located on the left side of the page. All of our pages (with the exception of the message board and our chandlery) use the menu.

You can also get to the boat specs quickly from the message board by scrolling to the top of this page and clicking on the "Cape Dorys" link. To get to the same page using the menu, select "Cape Dory Info" then "CD Boat Specs".

Hope this helps.

Fair winds,
Cathy
