I don't think this is a complex problem

Which one encounters more resistance? A person walking into a door that is free to swing open or one that is latched shut? The water is ther person, the door is the blade, the resistance is drag. Clearly a free wheeling prop allows the water to go through and causes less drag and turbulence.

Go for it!

Dick, You will have absolutely no trouble cruising to the places you list in your posting. A couple of years ago I sailed up the coast of NJ to NY harbor...through Hell Gate and up the CT coast. It was a wonderful trip. I continued to Block Is. from Mystic arriving at Salt Pond at dusk. I then conti...

Randy,
I have been looking for the pump you describe but I have not found one. Can you suggest a source. My search for a 'diagraph' comes up with nothing. I would like to get rid of my submersible bilge pump as well...I don't trust it.

Jim...I bought a 1976 CD 28 about 9 years ago and I have never regretted it. Over the past few years I have slowly upgraded her and I like the boat more and more. I replaced the plastic ports with bronze ports from Newfound Metals and they have been great...never a drop of water. I repowered last ye...

Don't wiggle it.

I wiggled mine to get it out and it cracked the mounting base (which then had to be welded back together). Best way is to remove the mounting base from the cabin sole, put the tube in a vice (protect is from damage and don't squeeze it hard or it will deform!)....then use a torch to heat the base an...

First, be sure it is necessary

Randy, Before you start this job, make sure that the core really is wet. Moisture meters are notorious for being unreliable. I once had a part of my hull surveyed....I watched the surveyor and he said that the hull was wet. The next day, his partner came to have a look (he didn't know the other guy ...

Whisker pole

Anyone have a recommendation for a whisker pole to tame the club-footed jib on CD-28 for downwind sailing? I am presently looking at a Forespar pole that extends from 6' to 12'. Is that sufficient? I would also like to use it for the genoa.

Replacing running rigging.

I am having a problem replacing the main halyard on my CD 28. Nobody seems to have three-strand dacron. I like three-strand because I can put the splices in it easily. Does anyone know the correct sizes for the various lines (jib and main halyard and main sheet) as well as a source? I am also in the...

backing plate

For my dynaplate, the bolts are the same material as the plate. Be very careful not to over-tighten! That plate is not a solid piece of metal and it will crack. Remember, it doesn't do any structural work...it just needs to be firmly in place. I put a strip of oak on the inside of the hull as a back...

Yes, it is seawater in the crankcase

You definitely have seawater in the crankcase...I had the same problem. But all is not lost....pump it out...put in new oil....light 19 wt....run it awhile and then change it again. But before that, find out how the water is getting in. Believe it or not, even when sea water finds its way in, the oi...

I have a CD 28 with a tiller and locating the chartplotter was a problem. I didn't want a swinging bracket and I also did not want to have the chartplotter always outside and exposed to the elements. Here is the solution I came up with and I am very happy with it. On the port side I installed a 6&qu...

Adding a Bobstay

I have an older CD 28 (1976) which has the small bowsprit supported only by the bronze hardward to which it is affixed. The headstay attaches to it as in all other 28s but there is not a corresponding bobstay....I have never completely trusted this arrangement. Can anyone comment on the idea of addi...
