Overcoming weather helm

My CD22D has a weather helm problem. I am forever having to pull the tiller to my chest to keep the bow from pointing into the wind. What do I need to adjust to allow for less pressure on the rudder and the helmsman?

Finding a leak

Thanks for the great ideas. I'm cleaning and seating all of the seacocks. After I reassemble them I'll try your suggestions to find the leak before putting her to bed for the winter. Needless to say, I will be paying close attention when I drop her in the water this spring.

Finding a leak

I have a leak in my CD-22D. I hadn't been on my boat for a week. When I went on board to bring her to the yard for an end of year haul out I found the cabin with 6 inches of water in the cabin. The bilge pump failed. After I hand bailed to nearly an empty bilge, I motored for an hour to the yard. Du...

I went through some similar questions before I bought my current CD-22D. I got some good advice and went for the diesel. The boats hold their value better, they are safer in bad weather, they are more responsive when you need it, and they will run forever. These keel boats are not suitable for self-...

Re: CD 22?

I thought about age and my recommendation on picking a diesel. As you probably know diesel are tougher than gas engines and seem to last forever when properly maintained. Lots of things on an engine deteriorate with age only but most of those are easy to replace. I always assume a motor on a sailboa...

Re: Cape Dorys

Years ago I was facing the same question so I checked out all three in the market. They all sail about the same but the motor was the difference for me. For security in all kinds of weather there is nothing like a diesel. You don't have to worry about losing power in a following chop when the outboa...

Cape Dory 22

I believe that model had a winch on the port side of the mast for the jib. The standard on the starboard side of the mast was just a cleat for tying off the halyard so I assume the winch you speak of was added later. You should have no trouble raising the main after you point into the wind with the ...
