Brown Bottom

I asked the board this question 3 years ago and followed its recommendation to mix red with a little bit of black or grey and yellow. It worked fine. I have the exact proportions somewhere but with a little experimenting its not difficult.

CD Furler

I got a Harken for my CD24D two years ago and am very satisfied with it. My only mistake was not getting a furler earlier.

Engine trouble

My 16 yr old 1GM Yanmar is burning oil, fast. While running, my temperature alarm went off. I discovered I was very low on oil. I put in over a liter of oil. It ran normally expect for a lot more smoke out the exhaust, especially at higher rpm's. Also, the exhaust water is oily. The engine noise is ...

Teak substitute

Given the small amount of teak you need Burmese teak is the only way to go. However, as an informational comment, where a good marine wood is needed at a non-teak price, consider spanish cedar (cedra oderata). It machines well, has a natural oil like teak to protect it, it has a redish appearance li...

Alarm in deep water

On a related note, what causes a depth finder without a deep water function to go off for no apparent reason in 100 foot water?

When to reef

How's the old saying go: When you think it might be time to reef, it is probably too late. This is also a good argument for a rolling furler to simply reduce sail from the safety of the cockpit and not getting wet while hanking on a storm jib.

Oil cloud

I'm trying to look for a silver lining in this oil cloud. My best hope is this will open the eyes of many that we need to take a national priory view (think Manahatan Project) at this whole carbon based energy system we have created. The potential of off shore wind power on all of our coasts is esti...

Tiller tie down

As I use my jib sheet cleats for the sheet lines to secure the rolling reefer from movement at anchor due to high winds, I have a small 1/2 clasp secured to the teak cowling and run a light line horizonal from port to starboard and attached to the tiller.

Replacing mast lights

Does anyone know who the manufacturer of the CD22D's mast combination nav and foredeck light is and where to get a replacement fixture? Also, any tricks to replacing this light?

CD 22 Jib Issues

Tom, I don't have the tech skills of many of the sailors on this Board but my 20 years of sailing a CD 22D has taught me some of her sailing points. It sounds like you do some single-handed sailing. If so, I suggest you unpack that rolling furler for the jib and install it this spring. What you lose...

Manual Bilge Pump

I just installed a replacement pump on my CD22D and used the Whale Urchin. It worked out fine. Make sure you order the 'thru deck' version with the removeable handle. I think the model is BP9013.

CD 22

I have a CD 22D 1986 and love it. You mentioned the sail has no reef points. My boat has a rolling main boom that you roll the main sail around to reduce size. If the '84 has the same boom, you will need to pull the boom toward the stern and begin to roll evenly. At the same time, of course, you nee...

Boot Stripe Color Change

I guess I've never changed the color because if I painted over it and it chipped I'd see the old color unless I sanded the old paint off. I've got too many other spring projects to do extra sanding. However, if I was inclined to change I'd go with a burgundy or Chinese Red.

Boot Stripe Color

Color is in the eye of the beholder. I have always used a hunter green hi-gloss. I think it looks good against the brown.

Mixing color to make brown

I almost forgot I started this thread. I ended up mixing a red and black Petit bottom paint and it came out fine. What do I have to mix to get rid of the rain on the Maine coast?
