Re: Water tank cleaning
I found a high pressure garden hose pistol nozzle fits into the inspection port and can be aimed over most of the tank interior. I siphon all the water into the bilge, then used the pressure blast to dislodge the sediment, mildew, etc. Siphon all that into the bilge and repeat again and again until...

Re: CD27 chainplate condition, maintaining/replacement, exam
Hey all, thanks for sharing. These look pretty normal. That cold steel is going to get surface rust no matter what. In the starboard picture, it looks like you might have a little water intrusion near where the bonding wire is attached. You might consider rebedding that chain plate on deck. It could...

Re: CD27 chainplate condition, maintaining/replacement, exam
Thanks for the responses. Jim, it's a '77 build. I would like to eventually cruise extensively but will have a few more seasons here in Lake Michigan prior to taking off for more distant salty horizons. I accept that I'll probably want to improve upon the existing chainplate situation, along with so...

CD27 chainplate condition, maintaining/replacement, example
I have what seems to be surface rust on my chainplates, but I would like to get opinions from more experience CD owners. Here's the worst of what I have discovered on both sides... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50768548556_e05525f1a8_c.jpg [port] https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50767806298...

Re: Dome Light LED - Switch Update / Your experience
I ended up installing the red/warm white kit with these switches: https://amzn.to/39eVLfc https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51-KInwUe3L._AC_SL1000_.jpg https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/615Owwuvc-L._AC_SL1000_.jpg I did have to bore out the hole for the switch to fit, b...

Re: Dome Light LED - Switch Update / Your experience
Thanks for the input. My issue with the complete unit is that they are plastic (both bezel and lens) and more expensive than the update kit. I think I'd rather have the original metal bezel and glass lens.

Dome Light LED - Switch Update / Your experience
After a bit of research, I've arrived on the idea to update 2 of my incandescent dome lights with the Dr. LED 12V R/W LED Kit ( https://www.doctorled.com/store/12V-R-W-Dome-Light-SMD-LED-Kit ) rather than replacing the entire fixtures. How-to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vm7zBT16IK4 I woul...

Re: About to purchase CD27 (my first sailboat)
Congratulations and best of luck with your new boat. Thanks much, Jim! [image of collar zinc] Thanks for providing a pic, appletim1. Curious what boat this pic is of? That collar looks pretty big. It doesn't have a noticeable effect on forward or reverse power and handling? I'm curious of the pros ...

Re: About to purchase CD27 (my first sailboat)
Well, I went ahead and did it, and I'm not sorry one bit! :D It was my best Halloween to date. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50555341577_8cc0f44181_n.jpg We arrived at the boat yard around 0930 hrs and proceeded to wait for the crew to put the little beauty in the water. She hit the water and ...

Re: About to purchase CD27 (my first sailboat)
Great advice, Fred, thanks! I very much agree about the safety aspect and letting the rest sort itself out next season. With that said, I feel like I'll be practically living aboard her for several months in 2021, mostly at a slip in Montrose Harbor. That being the case, I think it's a safe bet that...

Re: About to purchase CD27 (my first sailboat)
Alright, here she is, JU JU, a 1977 Cape Dory 27, hull #58 located in Chicago, IL. I believe I'll be the 4th owner if all goes well with the sea trial, which will hopefully be this Saturday. Here are some pics... http://brandonlove.com/shared/juju/1977-Cape-Dory_16074_6.jpg http://brandonlove.com/sh...

Re: About to purchase CD27 (my first sailboat)
Thank you all for your responses. After reading your responses and doing a bit more research, I plan to drill a couple holes in the bottom of the rudder before the hard freeze sets in. Hopefully this will allow for some drainage beforehand. As for the zinc anode, I appreciate the link, mathiasben, a...

About to purchase CD27 (my first sailboat)
Hi all, I'm about to make an offer on a CD27. I fell in love the moment I set eyes on her. I just received the "out of the water" survey results and wanted to get some experienced CD owners' take on a couple items... 1. Rudder - High moisture content with no delamination (sounded with hamm...
