Re: Engine swap

Some good food for thought. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in a big idea and be completely oblivious to the obvious! A 40 year old engine at a cheap price may not buy enough time to warrant the time and money to install it. A two cylinder might be better from an age, weight, and maintenance p...

Engine swap

I have done my best to nurse my 1975 Faryman single cylinder along. Parts are difficult, if not impossible to find. Last spring as I was preparing to take the boat to get launched I decided to give the engine a start. It ran fine before winterization two years prior. There was no compression to spea...

Re: CD28 Transom Dimension

I have a 1975 CD28. Roughly, the dimensions are 6 foot across at the top and 34 inches from top to bottom at the center. At 1 foot in from the outer edge it measures 26 inches down and at 2 feet it measures 30 1/2 inches down. I will try to load a drawing later.

Oh, I forgot to mention: get the fuel can out of the cabin!

Re: Beautiful Pictures of a Cape Dory 22, CD22 - Salvagable?

Of course, I am no expert, but I see a lot of promise in the boat. I do agree, it is a pretty boat and really doesn't appear to be in too much disrepair from the photos. It clearly needs some attention but it is floating! There are lots of projects visible so I would start, as you said, with making ...

Re: Repowering a CD 28

Oddly, my 1975 CD 28 failed to hit the water this summer because the Faryman diesel didn't have enough compression to start. It ran fine when I put it away. I have struggled to find parts for this engine since I purchased the boat and was always expecting it to 'go south'. The boat is in otherwise g...

Re: Pulpit Harbor (Maine) report

We got some fantastic views sailing around Penobscot Bay for 4 days this spring. The weather was very foggy the first day but made for some classic photos when we saw a schooner coming in the thick of it near the northern tip of North Haven! I also got a number of good sunset shots from Pulpit Harbo...

Re: Haven at end of sailing life?

Interesting Mike. This spring as I was preparing my 1975 CD 28 for the trip north on the trailer to put her into Lake Ontario, I figured I would give the engine a quick start to be sure all was well. Very little compression and no hint of starting. I cancelled my slip and Shumway Marine was kind eno...

Thanks for these vicarious day sails. Your writing and pictures are pleasant and read well. A good mix!

Re: Does the cape Dory 28 have a bobstay?

I have no bobstay on my 1975 CD28 hull #46. So far it has not hampered my sailing! Thankfully we have no dolphins as yet in Lake Ontario, but the way things go these days it would not surprise me. The bowsprit has remained fast and leak free so far without any indication of compromise. I have read o...

Re: Typhoon deck projects

Thanks JCW for exhuming this post. I found it particularly appropriate for the projects I am presently on. Sometimes I spend more time perusing this board for insight than I do actually completing a project. It's a good thing because I am more likely to do the job correctly the first time (or so). S...

Re: Selling Brand New Lewmar 30ST Evo

Just to be clear, I purchased an item from David a little while ago and I was very satisfied. He shipped quickly and it was very well packaged. The value also was good.

Sorry to hear he got rid of his CD.

Re: Is Face Book Killing the Forum?

I gave up Facebook about 6 months ago. There were too many cantankerous characters that seemed to have little else to do. I am not sure what exactly people are doing with their time. This forum has always been a favorite of mine since joining. The comments are insightful, respectful, educational, an...

Not a CD but...well worth watching!

I am not one to post video references but this one caught my attention. Might be one of the best I've seen. It's a Mystic Seaport film made about a 4 masted barque, The Peking, rounding Cape Horn. The sails alone were over three acres of cloth. It was filmed in 1928 and I believe it was narrated in ...

Re: Slip or mooring fees

My 1975 CD 28 through Progressive costs just a little over $300/year with Comp, Collision, liability, medical payments, and uninsured boater. It does limit me to only 75 miles from coast of US or Canada though. There is a premium for further distances but I don't need it as yet! That also includes &...
