Re: Halyard Replacement
If the old halyard is still in place, the mast is up and the sheave is not jammed, I seize the end of the replacement halyard, then sew the old and new halyards end to end with seizing twine. With the two halyards butted together, I sew vertically between the two so the diameter remains the same dia...

Re: Water under the motor
If the setup on your CD30 is like my 28, the pan under the engine is there to catch oil, antifreeze, or water before it gets to the bilge. If it drained to the bilge, there would be potential for pollutants to be pumped overboard. It also helps identify leaks from the engine. I inspect and clean the...

Re: Ramp Launching New Owner
Extend it while on level ground. Same thing goes for raising and lowering the mast. The idea behind the extension is it allows you to put the trailer further into the water without getting your vehicle's rear axle wet. Use the extension every time you launch or retrieve. If possible, the driver need...

Re: New Boat Inspection
In addition to all the comments, hire a marine surveyor to go over the boat. They don't inspect the engine, so your mechanic should look that over. Having the boat on the hard will be a benefit because the surveyor can inspect everything. Since it's an old boat, insurers often require a survey befor...

Re: Fuel quality question
Since you are dealing with only about 3 gallons of diesel fuel, just suck it out and recycle it. Where I live, the local city maintenance yard accepts it and heats their building with it and used motor oil. Clean the fuel tank as well as you can, making sure there is no left over water, algae, crud,...

I cleared the snow off my CD28 in Sequim Bay, WA yesterday after about 7 days of sub freezing temps and about a foot of snow. Temps are rising into the 40s now, so back on the water every chance I get.

Re: Slip or mooring fees
At John Wayne Marina on Sequim Bay, WA my CD28 costs ~ $300/Month. Electricity is $10/month plus .07/ KHW. I keep the Pinafore in the water year round, since there are many good sailing days even in winter. There's also the frostbite races on the weekends.

Re: Chartplotter
I have a Garmin 4208 chart plotter on my CD28 Pinafore. It works well and is mounted on a swing away door so it sits in the hatchway when in use. I also have OpenCPN on two android tablets and two android phones. I also have it installed on my laptop and desktop. It is free on the google play store ...

Rounding the Mark
image0 - Copy.jpeg Rounding the Mark at the recent Hospice Charity Regatta on Sequim Bay. We managed to not hit the mark. They didn't catch me blowing on the mark to keep it away (which certainly made no difference). We placed second in the cruising class. You shouldn't ask how many boats were in t...

Precision Sails is based in Victoria, BC and their design work is done there. Their sails are made in China in a factory that Precision says they own and is managed by a couple from Scotland. I bought my mainsail from them and have now sailed with it for 2 seasons. I've been happy with it. I optione...

Re: Is my CD28 sinking?
My CD28 has the same issue. the bearing (or packing) at the top of the rudder tube needs to be replaced. I haven't done it yet, so its an item on my project list. You aren't sinking unless you have water coming in somewhere else.

Re: New bow sprit
I'd go with epoxy and clamp it tightly. make sure there aren't any voids. Two inch widths should be ok. Do any drilling you need in it, then coat the whole thing in epoxy. once you're good there, sand varnish it with your favorite product. I like Epifanes, but any good spar varnish should be ok. I r...

Re: Rethinking the Dinghy - The "Portland Pudgy"
I also have a Walker Bay 8. We don't use a motor on it, preferring to row. I stow it on the fore deck , and tow it while under way. My crew, She Who Must Be Obeyed, is just under 5 ft and can't see over it so we always tow. I was looking at several options, including building one, but the Walker Bay...
