Re: Yanmar 1GM
My family has had this engine in one of our sailboats for over 25 years, which overall has been very good, dependable, venerable motor. However, we have had to replace the exhaust manifold twice due to carbon build up. We used to "baby" the motor by starting it and letting it warm up at lo...

Re: Mariposa and Far Reach
John, I think this is Mariposa that used to be moored in Camden, Maine. A long-time acquaintance of mine, the late Leonard Lookner, owned her, and had her repowered with a ~40hp Yanmar and repainted. She was a first generation 36 if I remember correctly. I sailed with him one day when I was looking ...

Re: Marine Surveyor--Rockland Maine
Ted, pick 2-3 local, disinterested brokerages and ask each for 2+ names of independent surveyors. There has been some turnover locally in this small cottage industry. Good luck!

Re: Where Is The Far Reach--Part III
Interesting question posed here. My answer is, A, if it looks good, it is good; and B. Benjamin Mendlowitz's explanations of marine photography is the best I've observed, one of which can be found here: https://www.offcenterharbor.com/videos/marine-photographers-eye-benjamin-mendlowitz-in-new-zealan...

Re: Engine Installation on the Far Reach
Congratulations, John! I hope to see the Far Reach some day. This has been a great thread to follow. It must be one of the longest on the discussion board. I hope you enjoy the fruits of your design and labor for many years to come.

Re: Perkins 4108 raw water pump
I have the same issue. the boatyard saw spot rust on the engine mount crossbar under the water pump. I am going to watch it as I always have. Its dripped for 5 years, about one drop every 45-60 seconds. I plan to wire brush the crossbar, and as Dave Perry told me once, give it "a spraypaint tun...

Re: Bottom Paint for New England
I'm across the anchorage from you. I get Sea Hawk Monterrey at Hamilton Marine, which I use for two seasons.
You could try it for 3 or more seasons and see how far it goes. good luck.

I keep all of mine going, and have replaced one backer plate with g10. I love that these are serviceable. The lapping kit and grease from Spartan is a great "tool for the job."

I know you got an earful already on this, but my two cents is to go sailing on a 36. If you want to crew one evening race next season in Casco Bay, private message me.
