Righting a Ty on it's trailer
I had a tree come down on my Ty over the winter. Fortunately it came down at an angle, plus it lodged in the fork of another tree, which held it up. Damage is two hull perforations, a deformation of a couple of inches of the hull to deck joint, some torn up rub & toe rail, and a slight bend in t...

Typhoon repairs - Door County WI
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced shop somewhere in Door County? I had some hull damage over the winter from a tree & have two hull perforations below the waterline and a torn up section of rub & toe rail. Also deformation of a couple of inches of the hull to deck joint. Thanks. John

Cetol finish
Happy new year all! I'm looking for input on the new line of Cetol finishes - I re-did the teak on my Typhoon about 7 years ago with Cetol. I used just the regular exterior finish, which was readily available at a local paint shop (Cetol 078 stain, followed by a couple of coats of TGL Gloss). It's h...

Re: Mast Insert To Keep Lugs In
It's actually quite easy to make a cover for the slot - I made one for my Ty out of some aluminum scrap after a first season of trying to keep a plug fastened above the slot. I think I actually used a piece of flooring trim, so it already had a bit of a curve to it. Anyway, it's about 1/8th in thick...

Toe rails / rub rails
I'm working up my courage to tackle refinishing the rub & toe rails on my Ty (all the finish is worn away, except for a few patches on the underside of the rub rails) and wondered if it's best done in place or off the boat. If off the boat, is there a consensus on what to re-bed them with when I...

Joel White Nutshell Pram
Another possibility for you to consider is the Nutshell Pram. Joel White designed it for glued plywood lapstrake construction from standard dimensional plywood - I think I used 2 sheets of 1/4" and 1 of 3/8", plus various bits of cedar, pine & oak for things like seats, corner blocks a...

Typhoon main sheet traveller
I'm sure this question betrays the ignorance of the self-taught but what's a little foolishness among friends? A previous owner of my Ty removed the fixed main sheet block from the aft deck and replaced it with a traveller that sits directly behind the eyebrow of trim on the aft end of the cockpit. ...

Typhoon rudder post lubrication
Is there a way to lubricate the rudder post without removing the rudder? Can I just take the tiller bracket off and force grease down the tube or is there a zerks fitting somewhere for a grease gun? Any particular kind of grease - automotive/bicycle (which is what I have on hand) or is there a marin...

Mast gate covers
Sorry, I won't be able to get a picture until spring. Here in Wisconsin we have lots 'o snow & the mast is 100 miles away in Door County, under a bunch of it. The carpet strip I used is one of those bits that's used to hold down the end of wall to wall carpet at a doorway - imagine a flat piece ...

TY mast gate
I executed an idea that I picked up from this board ages ago on mine, a cover for the gate on the mast to keep the sail lugs from falling out. They're fashioned out of an aluminum carpet strip, so they're somewhat bent to the curvature of the mast. They are the vertical height of the gate and the wi...

Jeff - that's exactly what I had on my Hawk, a wooden boom attached by a shackle to the stem, with a fastening on top for the clew of the sail. I didn't bother with a topping lift, as the whole thing was only 5 ft long or so and made of a 2 x 2. When lowering the sail, I just tightened the sheet to ...

I had one on an old Pearson Hawk daysailer and found it very handy. I fully intend to rig one one of these days on my Ty, but have to get a smaller jib first - the jib has to be able to clear the mast, which limits it to a foot of about 6 feet (vs 7 ft 7.5 in. for my current smallest). I think the s...

Battery charging via outboard w. alternator
I've got a TY with very little in the way of electrics (battery, running lights and radio). I also have a 5 hp Merc outboard with an alternator that connects to the battery to keep it charged. The wires from the alternator just connect directly to the battery posts. I'm planning on adding some light...

Typhoon trailer loading
I just pulled my boat out for the season and, whenever I do that, I'm reminded of a problem I have getting it to sit correctly on the trailer. I have a float on/off 2-wheel trailer with tongue extension. The problem is that the boat sits level in the water while the trailer sits on an angle below it...
