Re: Lake Champlain Float In 2014

Russ: Thanks for the great pictures. Also, thanks to Doug for organizing the event. The trails on Valcour were wonderful to explore especially on such an amazing clear day. The only downside was the trip back which involved rather more motoring than sailing. We're already looking forward to next year.

Re: Radar mount

I had a Edson pole mount on the stern of Vega III my CD 27 for 10 years. The pole was mounted on the stern deck portside and attached secondarily to the stern pulpit rail. (See pix attached). The upside of this arrangement is that it is easy to implement. There is no fooling around with cables runni...

Re: "All Is Lost"-This is NOT about sailing!

I have tried not to reply until now, but cannot resist. If you see this as a movie about sailing, you are missing the entire point of the film. Sailing is simply a vehicle for the protrayal of a man who is independent, successful (how else could he have a nice cruising boat), in very good physical s...

Re: Lake Champlain Float-in 2013 was a great sucess

Thanks Doug for organizing this event. It was great fun and a beautiful spot. The "ride" up the Lake on Saturday was exhilarating with a lovely westerly wind of about 15-17kts providing a beam reach the whole way. Free Spirit provides a great platform for relaxing and enjoying Dark and Sto...

Re: Cockpit Table for Cape Dory 27

Thanks for a great suggestion. I really like your idea. Would you be able to supply a picture of hoW the table looks? It would help me think about my options.

Re: Cockpit Table for Cape Dory 27

Thanks for lots of good suggestions and ideas. It gives me plenty to think about over the summer. The simplicity of Neil's suggestion of the varnished board I like alot while the CG Edwards site gave me several good ideas as well. I have a very nice teak grate on the cockpit sole that sits about an ...

Cockpit Table for Cape Dory 27

Vega III is a 1978 Cape Dory 27 (Hull #109) that is one of a few that I have seen that has factory installed wheel (Edson) steering. One of the benefits is that there is a cockpit table secured to the pedestal. I am thinking about converting Vega III back to the original design tiller steering. I ha...

Thanks for wonderful and thoughtful post

Jan & family I will join others in saying thank you for a wonderful start to my day. I loved having an opportunity to share in your adventure and your obvious joy. I too wish that there were more opportunities to celebrate adventures in smaller, less technology laden, boats. Can't wait to hear a...

Craig--thank you so much. This is just the information that I need. It conforms with what was given on the Spartan website as 38" mast to wire. At least I now know that the replacement spreader is in the ballpark of being the correct length. I do have virtually all of the other critical measure...

CD-27 Owner Needs help with standing rigging

Hi: I'm in desperate need of some information from another CD-27 owner. Vega III (Hull#109 c. 1978) was transported from Salem, Ma to Lake Champlain last Fall (her new home). Somehow, in the process of haul-out, transport, etc. the spreaders were misplaced. While the folks at RigRite (Spartan) can f...

Vega III CD-27 with wheel

My CD-27 #109 has a wheel. I've owned her since 1993 and cruised her all around the NE coast. I chose a wheel version originally because I had small children and I figured in a small cockpit the wheel option would work out better. Would I have preferred a tiller? Yes. However, I am now so used to he...

Joe: I have two friends and fellow sailors--one with a Joel White 35 foot ketch and the other with a 1968 Bristol 27. They both have composting heads (The Air Head) and I have cruised with both of them pretty extensively along the New England coast. I have been very impressed with the convenience an...

Weight Distribution

Paul & John- Thanks for your comments re: weight distribution--I think Paul that you are certainly correct about the problem being exacerbated by improper weight distribution. What I didn't say in my post was that about ten years ago I re-powered Vega III with a Yanmar 2GM--feeling that she was ...

CD-27 in rough weather

I cannot really comment on the Catalina 36 since I've never sailed one. I have owned my CD-27 since 1993-hull #109-and sailed it all along the Massachusetts and Maine coasts--several times taking it 70-80 miles off-shore while transiting the Gulf of Maine. The ability of the boat to handle rough sea...
