John and Bob, Thanks for the reply. I'm about 80% of the way there. Still need to struggle with the internal mount. Talked to a marine tech to see if he had had suggestions -- he just started laughing and suggested a "long ass" screw driver. Good thing I've got one of those. Had to disconn...

Transmission Cable Replacement

Had a little problem with my transmission cable yesterday -- it snapped off at the connection to the tranny. Happened coming into the slip -- boat stuck in reverse. No worries, just cut the engine without damage to property or person. It's my suspicion (from looking at it and some Internet searches)...

Seacocks and In-Water Storage

All, I'm contemplating spending my first year in the water. I've been exploring the bubbler options etc., but my big concern in proper seacock treatment. I've done some searching in the archive, and I didn't find a straightforward answer to how to approach this. Any insight on correct positioning (o...

Another Vote for Schaefer

I second Russell's comments about the Schaefer system for a CD36. I've had (I think it's the 4100) for over 9 years -- entirely problem free. So pleased, in fact, I just installed the 2100 for the staysail. I believe the archives include a string on the alternatives I considered at the time. No regr...

My pleasure. If you end up in the West River area, give a holler (cell: 703/304-3300). I'd love to grab a beer -- Davis Pub, Boatyard, whatever.

Best,

Slip

Russell, Welcome back. FYI, if you need a place to keep the boat (and yourself) while you are in the area (and you've opted to say in the Bay rather than head up to D.C.), I've got an empty slip for a CD36 on the West River across from Hartge's (Chalk Point Marina) until at least June 18. You -- or ...

Elbow Troubles

Thanks to everyone for the the responses and I'm sorry to hear that I'm not the only one to have experienced this problem. I got the diagnosis this afternoon and, yes, I had water in the cylinders. The good news is that they got it in time and it does not appear that a major rebuild is going to be r...

Cracked Exhaust Elbow

I was motoring out of the West River for a sunset sail last week and I started to smell something funny. I turned off the engine and opened the engine compartment. There was smoke and a fair bit of water in the engine compartment. I checked around - belts etc. -- and nothing obvious was amiss. Had s...

David, Fair winds and safe travels to you and Beth. Look forward to catching the updates on the webpage. We got a late start this year but we're in the water. We've moved up to the West River, so our paths are less likely to cross. If I'm down HHN way before your planned departure, I'll look for you...

I installed the Dutchman system on our CD36 a few years ago and I have absolutely no regrets. As I did, you have the benefit of starting with a new sail. The system works best when you can "train" the sail to flake with the benefit of the Dutchman. (Old sails are like old dogs in that resp...

Doh!

Mmmmmmmmm, through bolts. Makes perfect sense. How Homer-esque of me. Good thing I didn't put the Sawzall to it.

Good luck with the new mouse. You still have couple of months to rehab your hands before the cycle begins again.

Thx. much.

Tough Fasteners

I’m in the midst of some winter brightwork refinishing and I’ve hit a roadblock trying to remove the Lewmar primary winches our 36. Both are affixed to hefty teak pads on either side of cockpit comings. The screws mounting the bases of the winches are impossible (so far) to remove – I fear the PO be...

Woody,

I don't know about the Harken bat car system, but I would highly recommend the Dutchman system as an alternative to lazy jacks.
