Re: Lifespan of Volvo MD7A?
John Thanks again - I had thought about the coolant overflow tank, and will get the speedseal (it was real useful on the Volvo). Beta recommends the shallow sump (I thought it was for space issues) and the high exhaust riser. I'll keep thinking and getting info about the flexible coupling. Did have ...

Re: Lifespan of Volvo MD7A?
Jack - the part that is new is the mechanical fuel pump. The injector pump has 419 hrs on it since it was rebuilt, and is probably the only part that should be worthwhile. The alternator is 4 years old, and was hard to find and was expensive. Also have a Volvo oil filter and fuel filter that are new...

MD7A parts
Kittiwake's MD7A is being replaced. There are a few pieces that may be useful to anyone with an MD7A, and some filters, etc that I had as spares that are available. 1. Mechanical fuel pump - a spare that has never been installed. 2. Injector pump was rebuilt in March 2010 (St Augstine) and has been ...

Lifespan of Volvo MD7A?
AFter 30 yrs and about 4200 hrs, Kittiwake's MD7A has given up the ghost, at least compression-wise. Have decided to repower her with a Beta 14. What kind of lifespan have you had with your MD7A? 1. If anyone needs parts for MD7A, I have some new that have never been used, and will list them in the ...

Managing the Waterway
I agree wholeheartedly with Russel - Managing the Waterway by Mark and Diana Doyle has some features that other waterway guides do not - for instant safety info and "heads up" (bridges, inlets, etc) on the top of every page. Would also suggest using Clayborne Young's website, the Salty Sou...

Thanks, and look for Desiree on the Chesapeake
Thanks, have passed this on to Desiree's owners - if you see a Bermuda 40 on the Bay, or between Charleston and the Chesapeake this summer, say hi to Bobby and Janet...

Thanks
I've just finished putting the old alternator back in, and will take the "new" alternator in to have it checked out tomorrow. With more experimentation observation - think it was heat related, so maybe a diode or something? Thanks for the ideas, if this doesn't do it, will be going to exte...

Galvanizing Danforth
A large old Danforth is used as a storm anchor - it needs to be cleaned up and regalvanized for use on a friend's B40. Other that commercial acid wash and galvanizing, what options are available for the DIYer? Has anyone heard of using something along the lines of barrier paint?
Thanks
Thanks

Intermittant Alternator
I'm trying to sort out a problem that's developed over the last couple of days that so far has me baffled. After an especially rough crossing of St Andrew's Sound about 10 days ago, I noticed that my alternator had stopped putting out juice late in the afternoon. About 2 hr after shutting the Volvo ...

Kittiwake pronunciation
As far as I remember, the e is silent (like the wake from a boat) - there are red and black kittiwakes, one in the No Atlantic, I think the other is maybe Bering Sea - see the Kittiwake region of Newfoundland...

Unintentional Careen of CD 28
Well, it wasn't planned, but I can give you my experience with Kittiwake. After a year and a half of not going aground, 3rd trip through GA, I decided to go up a small creek off the Brickhill River to anchor, about noon. Long story shorter, about 1/2 mi in, went aground pretty much middle of the cre...

MillTech Marine AIS receivers
After sailing together from Port Royal Sounds to St Mary's River with another boat that had AIS receiver - I've been giving it a lot of thought. The MillTech Marine website: http://www.milltechmarine.com/products.htm has the best discussion of it that I've found, and various brands of receivers, and...

ST2000
Kittiwake has an ST2000 - it is rated for 10,000, which is almost too low for a loaded up CD 28. It works very well, other than running against the strong ICW currents in SC, GA, no FL - with the MD7A and full keel, doesn't seem to be able to hold much of a line. Also helps alot in sail trim - when ...

Kittiwake in the ICW
The trip from Norfolk to the Keys, and up the West Coast of Florida is very doable in a Cape Dory 28 - draft really isn't much of an issue in the channel. I would agree with the comment that summer isn't the best time to do FL, Kittiwake and I will be leaving Boot Key Harbour sometime late March to ...
