Re: Haven at end of sailing life?

Thanks to all who sent kind replies. The day before HAVEN was to be launched I fell in a car park and fractured my jaw! After many weeks of jaw healing I discover that I had also partially dislocated a shoulder!! Well that all began ten weeks ago but its remarkable how soon one can adapt! My log boo...

Haven at end of sailing life?

This last spring the engine did not start and I could not find any one to fix that or diagnose the problem. Most of the years I had the boat I asked the yard (in RI, MA or ME) to make sure the engine was ok. Sometimes a yard worker attached the raw water intake to a bucket of water and ran the engin...

Stern tube damage

I have a CD-28 1977 with a fiberglass stern tube. At high revs against tide and strong headwind a horrible noisy vibration occurred which stopped when I slowed down. Now with the boat on the hard and the bilge drained, it is possible to see that the stern tube where it enters the aft end stuffing bo...

Re: Single Handing

A lot of good sense in the answers so far. I also single hand a CD28. It is amazing how well behaved the CD28 is when left to its own devices. Just let go of the tiller and then go forward to the mast. I like things to be simple so I have no lines back to the cockpit. (Except jib sheets!) When saili...

Re: Restoring shape of sail ties

Hi Tim, Yes I have laundered them and tried ironing them but not with much success. The creases remain to a degree and soon manifest themselves. I also store each tie for the winter in a tight roll with an elastic band around it - and that also helps a little. I just wrap the ties around the sail a ...

Restoring shape of sail ties

After a year or two my sail ties tend to fold down the center and so become more like
a piece of ugly cord than a nice flat piece of webbing. Any solution to this?

Re: Smoke in engine compartment

Interestingly enough the smoke problem remains there was a much more serious problem. I found water pouring out of the exhaust! The cause was that there was no mechanical connection between inverted 'U' at the top of the exhaust and the 'descender' pipe which also had the salt water mixing junction....

Smoke in engine compartment

I have an escape of exhaust fumes. Light colored and not very thick but the cabin needs a lot of ventilation after some motoring. Also contents of the cockpit lockers get filthy with oily grime. I can't see where it is escaping. After starting the engine it appears to be in the air everywhere withou...
